Well if we were really aiming for equality, we’d only need to do 50% of those.

I had a relative once say that she’s vegetarian, won’t eat animals. I point out the chicken she’s eating and has always eaten, and she says “It’s from the grocery store, not an animal”. We had to have a long chat. People too divorced from real food and its sources, have some weird assumptions.

News@lemmy.world•A two-child household must earn $400,000 a year for childcare to be affordable, study says. ‘It’s easy to see why birth rates are falling’English
6·6 days agoYeah back in the ‘golden years’ of the 90s the were saying you needed to earn twice as much as our family did to afford kids. Somehow we raised 2, through university and all without going bankrupt.
Plus all the money paid out in wages went back into the local economy for rent, food, etc. It didn’t go to offshore tax havens.
Funny I thought it was the “the world is only 6000 years old” group that thought this was real for their ancestors?

World News@lemmy.world•The Genocide in Gaza Has Not EndedEnglish
5·7 days agoNot surprised. It was always going to come to this. Although until it happened, I wasn’t sure which side would do it. Hamas, had they ever become able to, would have done the same. It wasn’t for lack of trying on their part. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out this was all planned back in Jared Kushner’s first Peace Deal.

33·8 days agoBoom? If it were a boom, everyone would be prospering by it. It is a money and energy sucking wealth generator for the already very rich and nothing else. It doesn’t even do anything reliably after stealing the world’s cache of information to “train” it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon BUSTED for Widespread Scheme to Inflate Prices Across the Economy— Amazon, its vendors, and competing retailers are price fixing, hiking up prices for consumer products, making Amazon richerEnglish
14·8 days agoQuickest solution? Stop buying from Amazon. I quit cold turkey and the sky does not fall. I still buy what I need. I am sometimes saved from buying stuff that I don’t really need but was easily available. Just stop buying from them. They are the evil capitalism that everyone complains about.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does cats (and similar animals) can live with the exact same food every day, but we (humans) need a variety of food to survive?English
4·11 days agoMy guess: Cats might get everything they need nutritionally from one meat source. Humans need a more diverse diet.

Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•This N.J. Trump voter’s husband was detained by ICE: ‘I thought they’d focus on criminals.’English
9·11 days agoTurns out that most GOP voters are criminals or are married to criminals?
I grew up on a subsistence farm. Everyone always worked. Every single day of the year. Some days were very long, some were short depending on what needed to be done. To survive. Of course we had fun and time off as well. It’s about balance. Most people don’t have to do back to the land subsistence living anymore because they substituted living in cities and taking paying jobs to buy what they need. No matter the path, you still have to do some sort of work to live. You can choose which path to some extent. There are small farms looking for people to come work for them in exchange for room and board.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadians kind of hate America now. Our new poll shows just how much.English
12·14 days agoI think many Canadians are simply fed up with the charade that America is our friend. They never have been. Not under any President. Trump might be completely inept and therefore making it obvious, but America has always considered Canada to be theirs. Only an independent country so long as we toe their line. We must always support them and come to their aid but may never surpass them in any way. For that we must always try to keep a friendly posture so that they have no “excuse” to invade us.
Of course that is all about government. There are many individual people who might like Canadians. Be family. Be friends. Doesn’t change the nature of their government though. It truly believes that the world is theirs to do with as they wish and Canada is just a small country in that equation. America is and always has been the country that many people recognize Russia or China to be. We have to find a way to live with them but it would be a huge mistake to go back to thinking that they are actually friends or even allies.

Although somehow, Trump being just as mentally incompetent, wasn’t an issue. He may be a couple years younger but he is in no objectively measured way more competent. The GOP could run a sewer rat and leftists would still complain that the human Democrat was more of a problem. No, Biden, there isn’t a way back. America is hooped.
