  • What discussions happen on discord?

You ever have an issue with anything and you find the answer on some random reddit discussion that ends up in your search results when you’re looking around?

Discord isn’t really like the older methods of chatting, where people used platforms to chat for the sake of chatting. Entire communities from forums decided to just upend everything and move into discord. Niche software and other files are often shared among discord communities, or assistance for said files and programs is offered only through specific discord communities.

The platform is still better than anything we had back in the day, it’s just that for some reason people have decided that everything needs to be stored in there.

Anyway, I don’t see much changing. People will probably attempt to take this culture onto whatever new platform they move onto.

  • Yeah, historically it’s a bit more complicated. Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus which was an unorganized and very splintered resistance movement existed. There’s a lot of reasons for why they couldn’t quite make the impact they wanted, besides being splintered, but that’s probably the largest one.

Besides that though, the Germans did attempt to cleanse their image after the world war with the Wehrmacht myth. The myth essentially states that the regular army had no knowledge of the acts committed by the SS, that the average German solider was bravely fighting for their country under false pretenses. Obviously it’s not true, but it seems to have been rather effective unfortunately.

  • She didn’t deserve that, and these glasses are so problematic. Too problematic for society, just like so much of the AI products being introduced.

Yes some of the glasses are supposed to have lights, but if you search online you can find plenty of ways to cover or conceal them.

Also myself and my significant other wear prescription glasses that have a similar shape to these. At what point do we have to start being anxious about people starting to slug anyone wearing glasses out of paranoid concerns for their privacy?

I don’t want to deal with any of this. We live in such a dystopian world.

  • Civil War suggests there will be organized resistance.

This is true, but there’s more to it than that.

Around the time I first joined Lemmy a user on here recommended a book to me titled “How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them.”

I’m oversimplifying the contents, but civil wars tend to be more common in countries that are in a status that is between autocracy and democracy. Overwhelming authoritarianism and overwhelming democracy are stabilizers that make it difficult for infighting that contests the leadership of the country.

There’s a lot of ways to interpret the current atmosphere and where we are on that scale. I don’t feel confident in my ability to judge it.

  • There is a lot of information missing. I am in no way saying that she deserved such treatment, but I agree that I’m not entirely sure what she expected either.

I’m assuming that the woman was neither conservative nor an agitator. Based on this statement she seems just like someone who went there in good faith potentially expecting open conversation.

“I’m an engaged community member and I often sit at (discussion) tables with people that have many points of view. I work hard to try to bridge the gaps and I have big worries these days about where we’re heading, particularly with what’s going on south of the border.”

I understand that there’s more civility north of the border. Regardless, that was a conservative meeting featuring Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Canadian conservative party who regularly kisses Trump’s ass.

People really, really need to learn that you cannot have open dialogue with conservatives. It doesn’t matter what country they’re from, how polite they might seem, or their position on the conservative scale, the agenda is ultimately the same. Spend your energy on meaningfully opposing them, rather than gratifying them with these impossible attempts at communication.

  • Has he not been doing a decent job as fed chair head though?

I would say yes, even without considering how he has handled Trump. He’s had to deal with the pandemic, in addition to pressure from the current markets, and then there’s Trump. DOGE cleared out so many government agencies, has them working with skeleton crews which means there’s less data for the fed to base their decisions on. Trump himself has been applying constant aggressive pressure even before this investigation.

And frankly even if he isn’t, Trump going after him in the position he’s in is extremely serious. I agree that he shouldn’t be lionized and it should be more about the position.

And yeah, that’s really what it comes down to. Regardless of how you feel about Powell the federal reserve needs to be independent. The economy is fucked even harder than it is now the moment Trump takes control of it. Inflation will go out of control, savings will go up in smoke near instantly.

  • women don’t wash their hands as often

I could believe this. Not saying the men’s are much better as I’d say they’re definitely just as bad, but my wife used to tell me horror stories about the women’s restrooms before she swore off ever using one again outside of emergencies.

Listen, I don’t disagree with you regarding the class divide, but this is my own experience with plenty members of the older generation, including my own parents.

I’m not saying they all do, nor do I really think it’s a starting point for dealing with the issue either, but that’s what this meme is about. Again, it’s just my own experience and I’m sorry that it seems to upset you.
