  • Agreed in principle, however in practice great wealth/income inequalities tend to compound.

    Wealth and political spending bleeds into decision-making, leading to policies that benefit the wealthy at the expense of the less so.

    “Excess wealth” tend to disappear from ‘Main Street’ and the kind of normal circulation that directly generates +life_quality, into Wall Street circlejerks.

    “Excess wealth” also tends to seek safe harbor in concrete assets. Every investor tilts eg. the supply and demand of housing a bit more into the demand side, which leads to rising costs for people wanting to buy a house to own, since the supply of good lots can’t increase as much.

  • Depends entirely on how complicated your income/expenditure is. This year was the first time in 10 years or more that I needed to add to my pre-filled tax notice (major reno, deductions worth it). I may have missed out on a few hundred € of deductions in that time, but my simple life has always been listed immediately correct: Income from work done in the country, benefits, voluntary retirement insurance, stocks&funds wins, losses, dividends. Finland.

  • I’m not defending AI consciousness/sentience (however we define them), but IMHO your arguments aren’t particularly relevant/convincing. Why couldn’t consciousness exist in brief flashes? Isn’t the “would it even be the same consciousness” same as any sci-fi “clone with identical memories” thought experiment: if a LLM were conscious then each conversation history would be a “self”. And yes, it would be in some vague state of death/hibernation/non-existance when not propmpted.

  • “What are you looking for in a relationship/partner” and “how do you feel about having children” are, like, the top two questions people (should) want to know on a first date. Framing them as “tests” rather than “basic stuff the people need to naturally agree on for a relationship to work” is rather gross.

    I’d add general lifestyle/attitude towards money and saving, and political engagement in the “may get arrested for civil disobedience for a cause” sense.

  • I blame that the world, especially work, is more unforgiving of ADHD traits. Scatterbrained-ness isn’t as much of a deal in agriculture (where you usually can course-correct in time, I’d imagine) or monotonous factory repetition (of course it probably really sucks for ADHD-Hs for… well… monotonous repetition), but definitely is in an office environment. Also so many things now prey on your attention in constantly developing ways (all the ads trying to sell you things, just about every online service, streaming services, social media) that it scrambles even NT peoples’ brains, so of course it only makes it harder for ADHDers.

  • It mulled in the background for about 30 years to process, and then I came to the conscious conclusion that out of all the possible equally pointless reasons to hang around, for me satisfying my curiosities and improving the world for my fellow experience-capable-beings are the ones I want to do. Of course I still slip into mind-numbing distractions a lot, that’s just being human in the world we live in.

    That, and that practically, what are the options anyway? No point in ending it early, or wasting your finite life on something you don’t actually want.

    My choice of philosophy is absurdism, honestly because I think it sounds more fun than “optimistic nihilism” or “existentialism”. IMHO there’s a whole host of philosophies that basically suggest the same guide to living well, with different emphasis (for example):

    1. Figure out what you want (<- 20th century existentialism)
    2. Do it the best you can (<- stoicism, confucianism)
    3. Don’t let the other stuff distract you (<- stoicism, buddhism)

  • It’s very similar, part of the “threadiverse”, Fediverse services intended for Reddit-like UIs, like Lemmy and kbin/Mbin. Both use ActivityPub so you can read&post either on either.

    They both have their pros and cons. Piefed has better moderation tools, multi-communities, and combines crossposts, among some other things; downsides, it’s written in Python which is… weird, though early metrics suggest it uses less resources. Lemmy is more established, has better app support, and is written in Rust, which, prestigious. But honestly, a lot of it comes down to community and politics.

  • I know, it’s mostly the comments making fun of “bland european cuisine” that got to me; plural, so didn’t respond under one. The meme doesn’t even mention Europe. Sorry, should have been clearer.

    And sure, you can say that soy sauce is spice, or that the scallions and sesame oil in scallion pancakes are a spice, or that the soup portion of french onion soup is nothing but spice… Personally, I think in those cases what you call “spice” is one of the ingredients being celebrated (or in the case of soy sauce, sometimes just a way to add liquid salt). Such as in the case of spaghetti aglio e olio, garlic is the thing (along with quality ingredients), whereas in spicy foods it’s nearly always about the balanced spice blend. Even in something like chili, the peppers play a smaller part.

  • Some of these have been for privacy and FLOSS ideology over the past 5 years, but anyway…

    Fully deleted:

    Windows -> Linux (mostly; have a Windows VM I don’t use and needed hubby’s Windows installation for the MSM download tool for some old phones a while back).

    Instagram -> nothing

    WhatsApp -> Signal, Matrix/Element, SMS (friends understood, lost some community groups and annoyed others)

    LineageOS w/GAPPS -> LineageOS for MicroG -> DivestOS (RIP) -> GrapheneOS (-> trying to move to UBPorts Ubuntu Touch)

    Twilio Authy -> Aegis

    BitWarden -> KeePass (this one was purely because disentangling from US services and it still hurts, ❤BitWarden)

    Google Maps -> Organic Maps + browser Google Maps without location

    Still have but use very little:

    Facebook -> nothing (marketplace and some niche old-person hobby advice)

    Gmail -> Proton -> Tutanota (lingering registrations, occasionally collaboration through Google Drive)

    Google Drive -> Hetzner-hosted Nextcloud (for calendar, contacts, backups, etc)

    Reddit -> Lemmy -> Piefed (kept for some hobby groups I might need to ask sometime)

    Youtube -> Arte, local public TV streaming (YLE Areena) (for what I first check for passive entertainment)
