“Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” Professor Faber

Cotyledons are the best leaves 💚
That happened to me when I reread the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. Those books really influenced a lot of my thinking in a good way.

I’m loving it. So much.

4·1 day agoI’ve read a lot of Ken Liu’s short stories and I really enjoyed them. All That We See or Seem was the first novel I read of his and I liked it. Sometime this year, I’ll get to his Dandelion Dynasty series. I hope you like his work!

movies@piefed.social•What was your biggest movie let-down/disappointment ever?English
1·1 day agoGhostbusters: Afterlife
I have been a big Ghostbusters fan since I was a little kid. After people ruined chances for an Answer the Call sequel, I had high hopes for Afterlife. Biggest movie letdown of my life.
I know everyone loves to shit on Answer the Call, but that is my #2 GB movie only after the original. It was so much better than Afterlife, it was a true GB comedy ghost movie about adults with raunchy humor. Afterlife is just a teen family friendly coming of age horror movie, no raunchy humor, and shoves Easter eggs everywhere. It was so awful, I can’t watch Frozen Empire.
It’s a bit clunky of a start, but I am honestly enjoying it so far. I really like Captain Ake’s whole persona. I loved that she was completely sucked into a book while sitting in the captains chair, that would absolutely be what I would end up doing.
Not a whole lot has happened yet, so we will see where the show’s plot goes, but I like it. I really do like the shape of the ship too.
Omg it’s so cute! I love when they are at this stage; tiny with tiny baby adult leaves 🥰
I read too many books to remember all of the plots. I recommend books to people based on the vibe I get from a book. “Oh! You like dystopian romance? Try out the Mercenary Librarians books! I don’t remember what happened, but I loved them!”

1·6 days agoIt’s going. Mostly just work stuff, but my girl bunny has been really cute in the mornings this week. She has been running zoomies and doing binkies on the couch. I was really happy because I managed to catch a slow motion video of her which is adorable!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?English
1·7 days agoTHANK YOU! I will check them out.
I have been a Windows user since I started using computers in the 90s and wow has been my biggest hesitation. But with all the stuff Microsoft is doing with AI, ads, and data, it’s the first time I’ve considered and started actively looking into switching to Linux. There are so many instructions and things I don’t understand, but it’s nice to have something recommended by someone who used it. So again, thank you!!!
You’re the pineapple blossom post! That’s such a nice picture.
I’ve been intentionally trying to be less of a lurker and more active in comments. !books@lemmy.world is one place that I’ve tried to be more active because I love reading, thinking, and talking about books. I was also posting updates about a green lynx spider on my lemmy.world account before I switched to piefed, this is a good reminder for me to post an update on my girl (RIP) and her beautiful little babies.
Lots of us lurkers need to be more active, myself included.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It's dinner time, and you have to put together a meal with only ingredients already in your house, no going out for anything. What are you making? English
2·7 days agoI think I used a bit too much Italian seasoning, it reminded me more of a pork sausage than a beef sausage. It was a little gamey, but I prefer meat that way.

2·7 days agoNo, I am not. I found it at a local meat store that sells all kinds of frozen foods and meats. They have bison, antelope, crocodile, etc, but yak was the only on there I had not tried.
I ate it last night. It was pretty good, but I think I messed up the recipe because the meatballs were a little dry.

7·8 days agoI’m with others, delete the spicy and keep the rest. You had a life before whatever future partner you may have, it would be a major red flag to ask you to delete everything.
I’m the person who is still very good friends with an ex. I was very up front about it when I first started dating my current partner of 10+ years. If he had asked me to stop hanging with my friend and delete everything, I would have dropped partner immediately.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?English
1·8 days agoYeah, I’ve started reading the guides on how to install it. Wow is the one thing that has really given me pause, the only thing really. But Windows is getting so frustrating that I am actually making myself comfortable with Linux so I can switch.
Do you have any guides specific you would recommend?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?English
1·8 days agoOh I know, I’ve been looking into it recently. I remember days when gaming was the sole reason for not switching to Linux, but I’m also aware that it’s improved a lot since then.
I’m sure I can get it working, but I don’t feel comfortable switching completely until I’ve played with Linux a bit, which is exactly what I’ve started doing. I’ve started backing up documents and files onto separate hard drives so I can prepare to switch, I’m just not quite ready yet.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get it working, so I reinstalled Windows. It kept freezing at install then when trying to log in. But I’m going to try again when I have some time off.
