The Flemish government is examining whether self-driving vehicles produced by Elon Musk's American Tesla company could be permitted on Flemish motorways soon. The administration of Flemish Mobility Minister Annick De Ridder (Flemish nationalist N-VA) has been tasked with quickly obtaining clarity on a possible approval. Flanders wishes to follow the Netherlands, which has already permitted Tesla’s FSD cars.
hopefully the new laws dictate that the data is stored in Belgium or EU and the state systems get direct access. Not sure if our leaders are so tech-savvy.
Furthermore I believe the law should dictate that any systems used in self-driving vehicles are 100% open source so they can be inspected by security experts. That should be a hard requirement.
Even then, I reckon self-driving should be reserved for mass transport, not single vehicles as I believe those should be discouraged as much as possible. Granted, that is hard with the Belgian rural sprawl, a massive failure of public planning which is now costing us so much.
