The mobilization, organized under the “Global Intifada Disarm” banner, saw a flotilla of activist vessels converge this week on the Calabrian hub alongside nationwide strikes targeting factories and logistics nodes linked to Israeli military production.

Activists directly accused Rome and multinational shipping giant MSC of complicity, revealing that 16 containers of dual-use ballistic steel used for missile manufacturing have been stalled on the docks due to persistent public exposure. The direct action achieved an immediate victory when the container ship MSC Manasvi turned back to sea without loading under-scrutiny cargo, following a tip-off from BDS Italy to local dockworkers.

The Calabrian terminal, one of the Mediterranean’s most vital transshipment hubs, has become a primary flashpoint after Italian financial police were forced to inspect suspicious Indian-origin steel shipments earlier this year. The mounting pressure has sparked a parliamentary inquiry by the Five Star Movement, with union leaders emphasizing that sustained surveillance is the only way to prevent authorities from quietly smuggling arms components to Israel under the cover of night.

Organizers have framed the port blockades as a convergence of anti-imperialist solidarity and local labor struggles against the exploitation of Italy’s global south. Port workers and youth movements vowed to expand the maritime mapping of vessels transporting dual-use materials, declaring that the Mediterranean belongs to its working-class communities rather than the western war economy.
