It is basic cognitive dissonance: we love what we suffer for, like sororities and fraternities (because of the hazing etc.), military units (because of the misery, starting with boot camp), orthodox/intense religions (because of the constant self-denial and public embarrassment of living the rules), etc. Same with dogs.
i think the real main reason is looks, alot of people get dogs for thier looks, and not for what thier breed is designed to do. some owners dont like hearing that at all. and yes the popular ones always ends up in shelters or abandoned.
