I thought the Iranians had trained the Russians and gone home years ago ? I mean they have their hands full at the moment pinning the strait of Hormuz down - I can’t imagine they’d still have troops in Russia

Holy shit. But why would Russia accept or abide by a ceasefire now? They tried negotiation and it failed (or was sabotaged) repeatedly. Their fundamental demand has been simply ignored: They want Ukraine to be neutral and not a threat on their doorstep. They’d probably also demand that no missiles be stationed in Finland, and certainly none of the talked about nuclear weapons. But this only invoked mockery now and seems completely unsellable to the public.
So from their perspective their only option is to decide this war on the battlefield. Any ceasefire only gives Ukraine time to recuperate. You don’t hear it in the western media Ukraine is beginning to slowly loose the war of attrition now. You only hear of the escalation with long range drones, but Russia has retaliated just as bad. Ukraine is basically a landlocked country now with no functioning ports. 90% of their warehouses destroyed and fuel supply being bombed. Russia has started to escalate precisely because they do not believe in negotiations any more.
The entirety of Europe is in an intense state of anti-Russia hysteria. Switzerland is voting on maintaining neutrality or not. Diplomacy has been practically criminalized. Any “Russian Propaganda” news sources are censored and blocked on a DNS level, and sharing RT videos criminalized. Europe has never been this united in lockstep against a common enemy before I think. Trump will go there, the EU and US liberal media will condemn him for it. What kind of deal can he do? He doesn’t have the political capital to ensure anything. And he has zero trustworthiness and will break any deal if feels like it.
And it should be Ukraine negotiating this anyway. Or at least Europe negotiating. It’s completely bizarre for the US to go there now and make a deal, then expect Ukraine to accept it. Just fucking bizarre. How do you go from “Russia is at the brink of collapse and Ukraine winning” to extremely painful terms for Ukraine?
My guess is that Russia won’t stop now until they can take more land in the east. I’ve heard they want Odessa since it was founded by Catherine the Great. What could the West realistically offer them? They paid the price in blood.
On the other hand, Trump is actively trying to push the world economy into a state of collapse. Reason seems to be both the “nerd reich” plutocrats and a US imperialist strategy to overturn the chessboard and prevent a multipolar world. It sounds insane and doesn’t seem to make much sense, but if true, then the Strategy of China and Russia is actually to delay the planned ruination until they are themselves better prepared.
So that might speak for Russia accepting a peace deal. But I don’t see Ukraine or Europe accepting it. Somehow there seems to be a split in the US empire strategy.
