The serious issues in Belgian prisons risk exposing detainees to “inhuman and degrading treatment”, but beyond that, the problems also undermine “the broader criminal justice system” in Belgium. This is stated by the Anti-Torture Committee (CPT), affiliated with the Council of Europe, in a new report released on Tuesday following a visit in May last year to five prisons and the Forensic Psychiatric Centres in Antwerp and Ghent.
