Well the Anglo-Saxons should gave fought better at Hastings, then there wouldn’t be French words here. But I’m not sure it would be simpler.
It would still be a mixup. Starting from Celtic, then western Germanic (Angels and Saxons), Latin, northern Germanic (Scandinavians) already form a wild brew. French is only the latest major addition.
