The heatwave at the end of June resulted in even higher excess mortality than the health institute Sciensano’s forecasting models had anticipated. While previous heatwaves mainly caused excess deaths among older women, it now appears that (younger) men were also affected, according to an analysis presented by Sciensano on Wednesday. The Belgian government aims to have a new heat plan ready by summer 2027.
