Someone who wishes to have their data removed from the baptism register can invoke European data protection regulations. This was the ruling of the Advocate-General at the European Court of Justice on Thursday in a case concerning the Diocese of Ghent. However, it remains up to the national court to decide whether there are “compelling legitimate grounds” that allow the church to continue processing the data.
