Bos has two daughters, with a third due in January. At the grocery store, five items cost as much as a full cart once did. And on Wednesday, Bos and nearly 1,400 other people were laid off from their jobs at what had been the Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio.

Asked how many times he had voted for Trump, Bos held up three tattooed fingers. But he said he’s done with the president.

I don’t think so. That’s their framing. If you are a hateful POS don’t be surprised when people hate you back. I look forward to their suffering for their choices.

Tolerance means letting someone make their own choices, it doesn’t cover what comes next. It’s a disservice to tolerance to conflate the two.

It’s okay to just want these people to suffer out of a sense of revenge, but don’t expect them to learn anything or act like anything will get better in the broader society. These people voted for Trump in the first place because their lives already kinda sucked. I think more suffering is just gonna make them bigger assholes

Showing kindness to those who don’t share their kindness with others will have you overworking for people who don’t care. They are, in a word, toxic. Toxic people don’t deserve the effort and grace given to them - they are to be met with the animosity they revel in showing others.

showing empathy to people who don’t share your empathy is toxic. it’s toxic empathy is what it is.

…some people make horseshoe theory look real attractive. but really it’s just wilhoit’s law in action. the only seemingly workable politics left is conservativism.

Yes, they’re toxic and hateful, yes they don’t care, yes they don’t deserve it, but I would argue empathy and kindness is what sets us apart from them. I still want to improve the lives of everyone, whether they appreciate it or not. But our benevolence shouldn’t extend to allowing Republicans to remain in power…

Agree with you. I have plenty of empathy for them, I know they have none for me, but that quite literally is the difference. I won’t let go of that for hatred.

The way to improve the lives of the hateful is to have them live the life they demand of others. It is speaking their language. If they don’t want to be treated as such they can change too. If or when they change I will be there to comfort and console them, to help them heal from their hate, but I am under no delusion that they will change from others being too nice to them. COVID shook that naivety from me.

So we went from “enjoying the suffering of others” to “kindness is conditional”…

No one’s asking you to? The problem is assuming that all 1400 people laid off are Trump supporters and wishing them ill by association. “All farmers deserve suffering because 80% off farmers are Trump supporters!”
