Robot vacuums are a great addition to cleaning routines. They can help you get the day to day dust, hair, dirt, and pet hair. And those with mop attachments even help you keep the floors extra clean. They make less work for your weekly/monthly clean ups.

Any tool that helps you get a job you don’t like done more often and keeps things cleaner and healthier is a great tool in my book!

Do you have a robot vacuum? Do you like it? If you don’t, would you ever buy one or, do you prefer a little DIY?

My robot vacuum spends about 30 min cleaning the floors every day when I’m not around to hear the noise. A friend got one with a mop, but I’ve never felt that was necessary. Just regular vacuuming is good enough for now.

Yeah I’m in the same boat. Though I just moved and the mop feels like it may be useful here. But I don’t know how well it will do on these terribly installed floors. All the edges are cupping. New floors are in my future 🙃

I have owned four over 20 years: three Roombas and now an Ecovac. I do like it and in spite of the cost of cleaning solutions, distilled water, and filter bags, is a major time saver that mitigates the complete lack of crumb awareness from my spouse which was sustaining a cockroach population.

I’ve thankfully only seen one dead roach in the house when I first moved in. But ants. Ants will be the death of me. Thankfully the ants have really forced my partner to enact a cleaning routine. There’s very little setting things down now, they usually get put away.

I live in a tropical climate. There is a native cockroach that lives everywhere outside and occasionally will wander into homes and set up shop. It took five years to kill all breeding colonies in the house after I bought it.

Even now, cockroaches wander in once every few weeks so I need to remain vigilant.

Yeah I’ve seen them outside. It’s quite common where I live as well. I’ve just been lucky enough to only see that one inside. I did move some stuff outside recently and see a few scatter and that was a bit too close to my house for comfort.

My robot is not on the list but, Valetudo is an opinionated software solution for cloud-free vacuum robots installed on thousands of robots. Since it was started in 2018, it has matured to a reliable fire-and-forget solution that just works.

That was copied from their website. In short, more privacy for your robot vacuum if it’s on the list.

Shout out for Valetudo. The manufacturers’ solutions are just too intrusive for me.

I only buy robot vacuums from the list and install Valetudo. It allows me to keep my privacy, have a clean home and be save from enshittification. On top, it’s very convenient that you don’t have to get used to a new app with every new robot.

I bought a Dreame L10s ultra gen 2 per rtings.com and I like it. It was their “mid-tier” choice at the time and I got it OEM refurb for half cost. I agree that it doesn’t fully replace mopping or vacuuming, but it helps keeps things cleaner day-to-day until I do a full clean. I eschew the manufacturer branded bags and detergents for cheaper alternatives so that helps.
