Not gonna tell my country but I went to browse my national disability office’s website, basically the nation-wide government institution that decides your disability claims and gives you a pension (if any).
What strikes me is all their material shows people doing stuff like gardening, getting married. They have a video that explains the types of pensions you can receive and in it they talk about a retiree who “likes to go bicycling”.
I am not here to say that these activities are not valid, but man I wish I could go biking lol. Well actually I prefer the gym to bicycles, but that’s beside the point. Most days I can’t even leave the house, I haven’t been to the gym in over 6 months after I realized it was just torture and was not going to help with my problem.
I’m not going as far to say that I find this representation problematic but rather that it’s not really helping our case imo. People already don’t think highly of disabled people, the institution responsible for giving us a pension shouldn’t be promoting the idea that we can go biking now that we have some extra money! Imo it’s not enough that they handle cases, they should have a mandate to actively promote disability visibility too.
