It’s concerning how dismissive people are about this change considering this is the first in a long line of adversarial changes to what is a critical piece of software.

Not surprising considering those challenges against AI scrapers likely also effect Search Engine crawlers. Stuff can get through if it’s federated on other servers that don’t have such measures but if you don’t participate in communities on those instances it’s less likely.

Yeah, call this article what it is, clickbait fear mongering.

Wasn’t me who asked. I have been very strongly in favor of it though, guilty as charged. I will not shy away from that.
Again. I know people wish to scapegoat me and blame me for this (up to and including harassment). Like I said this would’ve happened with or without me.

Seems more like you want people to be furious.
I’m just making the observation that a lot of feddit users went into the thread and were pissed off about it happening, plus the fact that I got harassed persistently throughout the course of the vote. Those aren’t things that happen when people aren’t pissed.

If that is the case it doesn’t make sense why Feddit had such a strong and hostile reaction to the existence and progress of the vote thread.

Shouldn’t it be obvious I’m not? Read the post again:

I know there is a lot of desire by people unhappy with the outcome to scapegoat me as personally responsible (and take out their anger on me personally) but this is a community effort and would’ve likely happened with or without me.

Definitely seems sus.

You could always open feddit.org in a private window to check on them if you wanted. I checked recently and they seemed pretty unaware of it even happening. My guess is that they’ll be seething when they find out.

My legit accounts are as follows:
Yes I know this is excessive and I created many of them either when I was less sure of the Fediverse or because I wanted some activity separation in who I follow or communities I’m part of. And also because of Federation issues as well. I also was kind of hoping Lemmy would have something in the future where accounts like this can be merged into a single nomadic account. I had heard of something like that but I can’t find it now :/

I created it a while back because I thought having the username occupied would prevent this sort of thing from happening. I was more naive back then and didn’t think someone would be pathetic enough to use misspellings and lookalikes to get around that 😔.

It would probably be easy to break with a fake ID but people are iffy about those methods and refuse to speak about the existence of them.

We need to socially stigmatize developers who choose to use discord and “like and prefer to use it”. The only real way people will migrate from discord is if it’s socially icky to be on Discord.
Would expect nothing less from him.
No one was trying to claim that Hexbear and Lemmygrad are Lemmy.ml. This is one of the most embarrassing and pathetic attempts at avoidance by a member of Piefed staff I’ve ever seen.
The person alleged that all 3 instances were blocked, and the first two absolutely are. But instead of briefly clarifying about the one that isn’t while still addressing the two that are defederated by default, you instead chose to double down on the one that wasn’t to try and devalidate the argument when you know it is actually in large part true, 2/3 of the instances listed are actually blocked and no one said hexbear and lemmygrad were lemmy.ml.
Yeah I’m glad I never signed up there. Actually for a while I did leave Lemmy completely because I thought that piefed was going to take over the Fediverse and make it shitty like Reddit. Still not entirely convinced that won’t happen.

How does it seed videos anyway? I’m not familiar with this feature of Peertube, is it using Bittorrent? if so one could just use any Bittorrent client assuming Peertube exposes the magnet link (they really should).

And even if it doesn’t, you as a marketing department should probably still try to convince upper management that the statistical noise is growth, otherwise less money for you. That’s how weird marketing decisions happen, because large companies are extremely compartmentalized and upper management doesn’t have time or resources to check how accurate that is, that’s marketing’s job.

I think the story of Whatsapp should’ve taught people that capitalist fuckery and living long enough to become the villain are bigger threats than people give credit for, and Signal is just as vulnerable to this as WhatsApp was. They’ve also fought against any ways that it could be mitigated, they fought and are still fighting unofficial clients (moxie himself went around harassing people to stop), they fought any form of decentralization or interoperability with other servers and self-hosting.
All things that could make signal a bit more resistant towards something like what happened with WhatsApp, yet they’ve all been rejected in favor of exclusive control on the app (and for a long time it was GMS tied on the PlayStore) and exclusive control of the the network. Two things that don’t exactly bode well for the future.
Licenses can’t be used to stop people from doing evil, especially not the current evil people we have running the show now. This is an insanely liberal solution which is flawed in that it expects people to follow rules which they don’t want to and aren’t going to follow.
