Hey, I’m glad you said that! You’re right, we are just arguing semantics. We both agree that this hobby/job is something important
I find useful stuff at the dump and make long winded rants against consumer culture. Inspired by Pickle Rick and whatever I can scrounge.
Workflow is Linux + Lineage based on free hardware.
Quit buying shit from companies that destroy the earth in the name of making the already rich even richer.

UN is going to “manage the transition” - like it’s some fucking destiny to implement AI and destroy the earth with yet another environmental catastrophe… uh…shit
something…something…guillotines…luddites…working class solidarity. The transformation will happen in the destruction of corporate AI and the systems that allow the rich to control the working class. Fuck the UN “managing” the implementation of corporate AI.
Working class solidarity should be the focus. We should preferably do this before the bots get autonomously controlled opposable thumbs.

Ooooooo. I like it.

Sounds like a solid theory. Most are probably Jellyfin servers, but “I have a Jellyfin Guy” doesn’t have the same ring.

I agree, but Is it your hardware? Does an outside company own your hardware? Did you set up your own hardware that you control as your own (self) place of hosting? Do you maintain all of that hardware or does an outside company maintain that? Can a company arbitrarily shut down your host like what happened in OPs case?
Self-hosting is my choice to use my own hardware to (self) host. I am wanting to slowly move other stuff from hosting providers and self-host it on my own hardware.
I agree with all your statements except for the last sentence, because I use those same arguments to judge whether or not to host at home (self) or host externally.

This idea of it not being self hosted because it’s on somebody else’s computer is just weird.

If OP was self-hosting they wouldn’t have had a problem with their hosting provider.
I thought my post did a better job of virtue signaling. This one seemed to lack the venom and vigor of contrarian support for the opposing opinion.

I was just looking at NVME and RAM prices. Buying those things is a nightmare. I haven’t found any larger storage NVME lately but I was given some nice 8TB hdds for media and backups. Also, haven’t found ddr5 but found some free ddr4 for some servers.

Ery day is Buy Nothing Day

Hahaha. Yeah buddy. You sound like you are partaking in the grand old tradition of American Style Sarcasm! Fun. I enjoy the more refined Pisstake that the British so skillfully employ.

Yeah I agree. Planning what you need definitely helps. I usually make a list and discover I can either buy local, get the shit for free, or in six months I don’t really need it.

Yeah true. I saved a ton by not buying anything

Same. I just enjoy rants against the machine.

Sounds like a great day. Sorry about the cold. Unless you enjoy cough syrup. No judgement.

If you live in a government or university (or tech industry) town the tech churn happens often. I don’t always need the most modern stuff for gaming so ewaste supplies a lot of useful shit for me. Sport stuff can usually be bought from rich quitters for cheap. Same with work stuff (especially blue collar work stuff like workboots). Although, I definitely treat myself to quality sport stuff purchases from time to time.

I feel cleaner having shared the thought though! Now the day feels better somehow.
I hear ya. My hosting provider is crap too.
