PugJesus@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Bill Ackman pledges to bankroll any NYC mayoral candidate capable of defeating Zohran MamdaniEnglish15·3 days agoNew York mayoral races are notoriously unpredictable due to the city’s chronically low turnout. In 2017, for example, Bill de Blasio won reelection with only 14% of registered voters coming out to support him.
Damn, my hopes for Mamdani just got even higher. Low turnout under ordinary circumstances give high-enthusiasm candidates an advantage, by that enthusiastic base’s relative size to the ordinarily voting electorate.

Reminds me of the people who insist on higher taxes but complain that raising taxes on their lowly 300k+ two-income household would be oppression.
It’s never enough.
Some clients have an option for blocking keywords. Browsing by subscribed comms is also useful. I only have a handful of comms that allow US politics content that show up on my feed.

Not that praising Ukraine is bad by any means, but it’s just empty words from an empty skull.

Apathy, hopelessness, ignorance, and, in the case of GOP voters, malice.
PugJesus@lemmy.worldOPto News@lemmy.world•US Army Purple Heart veteran forced to self-deport: ‘I just have to drop everything and leave’English30·4 days agoNot sure where they’re getting that number from, honestly. The actual numbers are MUCH smaller, though still non-neglible.
PugJesus@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Promise of Victory Over H.I.V. Fades as U.S. Withdraws SupportEnglish16·5 days agoSo you’ve decided shitting on people who voiced valid opposition is the best course of action
Ah yes, the ‘valid opposition’ of critical support for literal fascists winning, under the excuse that “both sides are the same anyway”.
Very valid, as this event (one of many, I might add) shows. Marginalized groups which depend on the government not being fascists thank you and your kind for your principled stand against our lives. It’s truly a privilege.
PugJesus@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Promise of Victory Over H.I.V. Fades as U.S. Withdraws SupportEnglish15·5 days agoI believe that the ultrapurist attitude that many Lemmy users follow was a non-zero factor in the loss in 2024, such as the some 2 million 2020 Biden voters who refrained from voting for Harris solely on the strength of the Palestine issue; and that the Dem Party’s fecklessness and incompetence was, likewise, a very non-zero factor.
Lemmy users ourselves, as with any small community, are not really a factor in anything but in determining which discussions are useful to have here.
PugJesus@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Promise of Victory Over H.I.V. Fades as U.S. Withdraws SupportEnglish19·5 days agoLet’s not blame the insane people in power, no it’s the Lemmy people who had valid criticisms of Harris who clearly swung the whole vote in trumps favor. Actual insanity.
Goodness gracious me, why would I complain on Lemmy about the behavior and opinions of people on Lemmy?
It’s truly a mystery.
PugJesus@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•128 Democrats join House Republicans to block AOC, Al Green bid to impeach TrumpEnglish3·5 days agoIt’s funny. When the impeachment attempt was announced, it was roundly condemned by Very Serious Leftists as useless and, in fact, targeting Trump for something that was not actually illegal, and thus more proof of Dem complicity by engaging in ‘pointless’ symbolic action instead of ‘real’ interference.
And now that most Dem reps seem to agree with this position, many of those same Very Serious Leftists regard not supporting the impeachment attempt also as proof of Dem complicity.

If they’re ordered to shoot me, they’ll shoot me.
It’s not 1970. If the Marines decide to shoot you, it’ll be for reasons slightly more complex than “They were ordered to”, like “They were ordered to and believe that shooting you is in line with their values.” Unfortunately, you’re probably looking at a 50/50 split as to whether they’re Trump bootlickers or not
Or you catch one of the Corps’ pet psychopaths, that can happen too.
Policy was mixed on that - sometimes they kept auxiliaries near their home regions (because they knew the land and because they were less prone to ‘acting out’ when they were posted near home), and other times, especially after mutinies or revolts, they’d post them far from their home province, like sending North African and Sarmatian (near modern Ukraine and Romania) auxiliaries to the sunny reaches of the northern borders of Britannia.

Bad area, ceiling leaks, noise all night from the railyard, recent mouse infestation despite two visits from an exterminator, pipes intermittently stop working, pretty sure something is fucked with the electric bill, rent just went up 100$. And it’s still one of the cheapest places I can find.
I’m fucking living in it. God bless America.
