World News@lemmy.ml•Zelenskyy’s top aide quits after anti-corruption searches of his homeEnglish
12·3 months agoCorruption in one of the famously most corrupt countries in Europe!? As with most political corruption investigations I’m willing to bet this was a political purge. By whom and for what ends I don’t know but I’m sure that’ll be clear in due time.

3·4 months agoI hate to break it to you, but the Nobel Prize was started by a guy who invented military weapons and has always been somewhat of a sham. It’d be like Lockheed Martin peace prize.

2·6 months agoDude! My most unpopular opinion has always been that b track of tetris was more of a banger than the version! I’ve received dozens of down votes over it!

World News@lemmy.ml•Iran’s Parliament rejects US talks without preconditions, citing deceptionEnglish
5·7 months agoIt was incredibly stupid to use diplomatic tools so brazenly for war. Burned all credibility and for what, got a couple of sites maybe…
The American system isn’t even that fast. Unless you spend like a shit ton of monies.

I lived in Shanghai from 2012-2018.
All governments are authoritarian, some things the Chinese government does is bad and some things are good. They do more for their people than the US government but it’s not a paradise by any means.
Xinjiang Ren are definitely persicuted but in Shanghai it felt similar to how black people are treated in the US. Different, but similar. I don’t know about genocide so I won’t speak to it but I heard they felt they were being heavily survailed.
Living in China has its challenges but there were things to like to. It’s fair to say the ccp are better global actors in the past century than the US.
There isn’t really free speech in China. With Cia funded color revolutions being a thing I’m beginning to doubt if countries can afford being open and liberal without an existential threat looming, but that’s a dialectic for another time.
US is definitely worse. The main reason I moved back is my Chinese sucks and they were becoming more insular so it was harder to find work. Also the pollution and the crowds and abrasive culture were wearing me down. But I got a tooth removed for about $50 there. In the US with insurance I’d be out of pocket a couple hundred. Scam of a country we have.
