Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

Canada@lemmy.ca•Labour leaders vow ‘unprecedented response’ as Alberta uses notwithstanding clauseEnglish
16·4 days ago“As the labour movement in this province, our leaders have made a commitment to rise to that challenge, defend the teachers and their rights, defend worker rights more broadly, and to defend our democracy. We have no choice.”
[Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour] stopped short of confirming whether that response would include a provincewide strike, but said, “it’s one of the things that’s actively under consideration."

Canada@lemmy.ca•Alberta to invoke notwithstanding clause to send striking teachers back to workEnglish
8·4 days agoI’m not in Alberta, but pay doesn’t seem to be the sticking point here - the union is trying to negotiate on class sizes (which AFAIK the province is refusing to even disclose) and classroom supports.

5·9 days agoI took it from a news article from last week, which suggests pretty strongly that that proposal is exactly what was implemented, and they never produced an updated graphic.
But again, I’d welcome a genuine correction.

Weird metaphor to have in your style guide, though.

3·18 days agoNo, it says Canadian “beer” killed him. It’s an immediate signal that it wasn’t actually beer.

4·18 days agoWhat’s misleading about it?
The product came from Canada.
The “beer” is in quotation marks, indicating that it wasn’t actually beer.
A 21-year-old was killed.
In New Zealand.

19·22 days agoI don’t think I’d call it a “catch”.
Carney said that Canadians who fail to file a return when they earn under the basic personal amount means Canadians “who most need benefits often don’t get them.”
Those benefits include the GST/HST tax credit, the Canada child benefit, the Canada workers benefit, the Canadian disability benefit and the disability tax credit.

1·2 months agoI really think you’re putting words in her mouth.
“It felt impossible to go back to that kind of a life and I didn’t want to sacrifice my time with my family” has absolutely nothing to do with the process of transferring credentials to Canada, and everything to do with the job itself. “I feel that I can be a better nurse than a physician" speaks for itself.
There are plenty of stories about the challenges of transferring credentials. This, by her own account, as quoted in this article, is not one of them.

1·2 months agoIf the process were easier she wouldn’t have been “led” to reassess those priorities.
How does an easier process change her conclusion of, “I would be happier as a nurse?”

3·2 months agoNot exactly.
When Tretiak first arrived in Canada in December 2022, she looked into obtaining a license to practice medicine, but the complexity of the process and volume of paperwork led her to reassess her priorities.
That doesn’t say she thought it was “too much.” It says she decided it wasn’t what she wanted to do.
You can argue that the process is too much - and it probably is, at least in places - but she pretty directly states that it led to her deciding that she didn’t actually want to be a doctor, and would rather be a nurse.

Yeah, I lucked out in having nothing better to do at the time. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to catch all of the rest of the series, but I’m definitely going to keep an eye on it!
