  • So I’ll be honest. I use GPT to write Python scripts for my research. I’m not a coder and I don’t want to be one, but I do need to model data sometimes and I find it incredibly useful that I can tell it something in English and it can write modeling scripts in Python. It’s also a great way to learn some coding basics. So please tell me why this is bad and what I should do instead.

  • Let me add just how awful the park is. You have to drive there obviously, and the approach is laden with kitschy cowboy and old west themed tourist traps and overpriced hotels. Then you pay $20 for a parking space and get to gaze at the thing from a mile away. Exit through the gift shop where you can buy a plastic replica made in Shenzhen. Quintessentially American.

I’m really looking forward to the deaths of oldest, stupidest, and loudest of the people who don’t care. In fact, many of them die every day. As the salt water infiltrates their reinforced caskets and slowly attacks their preservative-ridden corpses, the planet heals itself.

Imagine you were born into a world that just experienced the defeat of fascism, the dawn of the nuclear age, the green revolution, the triumph of fordist production, and Keynesian economics. You might have been arrogant enough to think you’ve conquered nature, too.

As a geologist I think the deep time context makes this pretty interesting. Florida is a shallow limestone platform that was built underwater. It’s only been above ground for the past few million years because recently our planet has had a lot of polar ice cover. Its position above sea level is just as anomalous as the insane developmental practices of the boomers. So it’s fitting that they both go down together now, although it’s unfortunate for all of the people who suffer needlessly because of their arrogance.

I hope successive generations will learn to live in harmony with nature and accept that their actions have consequences outside of their tiny worldview.

  • This is such a tired narrative. You guys really want to focus on the leftists when half the country voted for an authoritarian?

Every movement has its radical fringe. Virtue signaling either your ideological purity or your solidarity with the only viable opposition are equally feeble attempts at clinging to a notion of victory in the face of total defeat.

EDIT: I wasn’t expecting this comment to generate discussion but since it did, let me elaborate on what I meant by “total defeat.” The defeat is not an electoral loss, it’s the fact that we have relinquished so much political power that all we have left is voting for one of a set of compromised politicians every few years. It’s a tired argument because it assumes that it’s possible to vote our way out of the mess we’re in, and it simply isn’t. We need to attack the point of production because it’s where the ruling class derives its power. And arguing about our sham elections is getting us nowhere.
