I thought the reason people side with Depp is because there are recordings of Heard mocking him for reporting abuse and admitting to hitting him, that he initiated the split, and that she gave an op-ed that suggested he was the sole abuser.

Basically all of this analysis relies on ignoring a bunch of evidence and reading into what Heard’s said. There is a shockingly long explanation of this point by point, something which is necessary only because of the time it takes to detangle “Heard sounds shifty”. Remove the suppositions, and it really just sounds like Heard is trying to save her relationship.

Secondly, primary or retaliatory, there’s a clear imbalance of power. This is a big part of what “me too” was about. It seems as soon as you’re of legal age, all manner of coercive power become meaningless to the public. “Me too” was about “well, no, I wasn’t necessarily raped as such, but there was a clear power imbalance that pushed me into decisions I wasn’t comfortable with”. It also discussed the idea of “the perfect victim”, where women essentially get the blame in a two-sides issue. IIUC Heard was barely upper middle class, and Depp has an enormous pool of wealth. There’s a clear power imbalance here.

Thirdly, and this goes back to the “I’m not on either side” part, the less you know the more susceptible you are to the organised campaign against Heard. That’s why people do these memes. That’s why I ended with: well if it’s both sides are bad, then why is Depp somehow beloved and forgiven and Heard is still mocked several years later?

It’s interesting there’s a sharp line between what women and men believe here. Sadly, not knowing the details makes the propaganda more likely to work. Heard and her lawyer were stupid, but that doesn’t change what likely actually happened:

• The dog shit the bed, because of course it did it had a problem with bowel control. The fact that Depp’s team have managed to convince people of this ridiculous idea shows just how effective propaganda can be.
• Heard was raped and abused
• You would have to believe that Heard lied to her own therapist for months to manufacture this. Occam’s razor, no, it happened.

The reason people don’t like Heard is:

• She seems shifty

That’s it.

I did watch the docco, and unfortunately it doesn’t really make it’s case coherently or entertainingly. That’s pretty bad because the creator is meant to be a comedian, and he really should have been able to ruin Shearer’s career but he’s just not all that great.

As for Apu, the reason he sucks is that he started as a caricature but somehow ended up a main character, and the creators have kind of painted themselves in a corner. Is he meant to be a wacky stereotype like the Italian chef, or are we meant to have pathos, like Skinner? Add that to the fact that there just aren’t many Indians on screen, and you have Apu as mostly the only Indian representation on TV.

It’s anachronistic, orientalist, and just a bit lame to do jokes like that. Heck, it was lame when they created the character, that’s why the specific note was not to make him Indian, but Shearer did it anyway.

There was a parent who didn’t correctly park her pram on a train platform, and sadly the pram went onto the train line, and one of the children and her husband died. This was a major news story, harrowing CCTV footage, a community in mourning. There was discussion on changing platforms to be safer, etc.

Similar story with an SUV which reversed over a pram. No CCTV, the story was barely reported, largely local news. Similar scale of tragedy, and sadly the SUV story is probably more common, but the fact that it’s common also makes it an invisible story.

I do think part of the issue is that you might not see actual violence on a train, but you might see some behaviour which makes you feel uncomfortable. Because you’re in a carriage with maybe 100 other people, then the likelihood is less that you’re in any actual danger, and far more that you’ve witnessed an incident which makes you wary. Meanwhile, there are several car accidents daily, but it’s witnessed by maybe 20 odd people, and most people only see a slowdown of the road.

I don’t know if there’s a name for it, but an increasing number of recipe writers are using only weight based measurements. This is super handy because you just have a scale, add ingredients, and just tare as you need. The measurements are also more accurate because, eg, flour can be compacted, so “1 cup of flour” could vary by a lot depending on how you measure it.

If this is true, then support a carbon tax without exceptions. All the extra food cyclists use will be taxed extra.
