They keep playing that clip of his caddy dropping a ball, and making fun of how he tried to do it slyly but it was obvious.

I just saw it again on Colbert, and I legitimately think the caddy is only trying to fool trump.

trump is 100% the guy to blame caddies if he fucks up, so the only caddies he likes are ones that can trick him into thinking he’s great. No one he’s playing with would ever call it out.

The only person they need to fool out there, is trump…

He legitimately might think he’s really a generational golfer. For the same reason every billionaire legit thinks they’re a genius.

Yes, he knows he cheats at golf. Other players have observed it and commented on it numerous times in the past.

Here the thing… Golf is a sport you play against yourself. Nothing another player does can impact your score. It’s a game of precision, consistency, and dedication. At the end of the day, nobody really gives a fuck about what your score was except you. You play to improve yourself. Cheating at golf is cheating at self improvement. Pun intended, Trump cheating at golf is par for the course, and it neatly sums up everything wrong with his personality.

You’re right about the last bit, but slightly off on what it means.

He thinks he’s got everyone fooled. He’s a toddler with no emotional stability and so he has to surround himself with people who will play along. Because even when other people call him out… what happens next?

They just shrug and move on. Eventually that makes these billionaires think that they’re master manipulators, when really, everyone is just tired of dealing with their emotional outbursts and are only going along for the paycheck.

I read an article years ago where the author played golf with him. The cheating was blatant and obvious, but not malicious. Cheating was a given. Trump expected everyone to cheat, and to not do so was foolish. Anyone who didn’t cheat was a chump.

This is literally the motto of our entire existence “lately.”

        Relax guy, that’s completely normal.

Every empire goes thru the same thing right before collapse. Rules don’t matter unless caught, and even if you followed the rules you might be “caught”.

So the norm for acceptable behavior becomes “anything that didn’t have immediate consequences”.

            That’s kind of the joke…

Everyone is acting like it’s normal that we’re running down the same checklist as the USSR did, it ain’t slow, it started before trump ever thought of running for president

            Quick edit:

I know “the /s is always needed”, but I’ve never once heard “relax guy” used non sarcastically so thought it would be cool

Imo. golf is the sport where it is the most absurd. It is made up so rich people can stand together, many meters away from anyone else to make shady deals. The entire game is just a McGuffin.

I liked the comment someone else made with several articles referencing trumps history of cheating in golf. My favorite quote from those excerpts has to be the one where hes cheating and the guy they’re playing with puts the ball back before putting and trump goes “he put it back, thats why hes an unemployed coach and I’m worth billions” so yeah, unironically thinks not-cheating is pussy shit lmao

Look at this guy! He’s playing where it lies. What a fucking loser!

So, I went and googled “Trump cheats at golf” stories from 2010-2020, and these are clips from the first three results that turned up - and there were a LOT of results!

    Yahoo Sports:

Trump hit a ball into the lake. But when the other players weren’t looking, he got out another ball and hit another try, although that too went into the lake. “So he drives up,” Faxon said, “and drops where he should’ve dropped the first time and hits it on the green.” […]

Tirico remembers hitting one of the best shots of his life squarely onto the green, but when he walked over, the ball was 50 feet away in a bunker. “Trump’s caddy came up to me and said, ‘You know that shot you hit on the par 5?’” Tirico says. “‘It was about 10 feet from the hole. Trump threw it in the bunker. I watched him do it.’”

    Golf.com:

He throws it, boots it, and moves it. He lies about his lies. He fudges and foozles and fluffs. At Winged Foot, where Trump is a member, the caddies got so used to seeing him kick his ball back onto the fairway they came up with a nickname for him: “Pele.”

Trump said, “So, where does everybody stand here?" [Trump then claimed he was at] “Four for a three.” Faxon had to laugh because Trump was actually putting for a seven, but he was claiming it was for a four,

They call him on it, but he just shrugs and cheats some more. It’s ruined his reputation in the golf world. Ninety percent of the people I interviewed — on and off the record — say he openly cheats.

he was right of the green but a little bit down the hill. He didn’t think anybody was watching, but I was. I saw him make a chipping motion from the side of the hill but no ball came up. Then he walked up the hill, stuck his hand in the hole and pulled a ball out. It must’ve been a ball he had in his hand the whole time.

He makes sure to hit first off every tee box and then jumps in the cart, so he’s halfway down the fairway before the other three are done driving. That way he can get up there quick and mess with his ball. So this one time — we were on the 18th — he hits first, kind of blocks it right, and jumps in his cart and starts driving away. My guy pures one right down the middle. I mean, I SAW it go right down the middle. One of his best drives of the day. But by the time we get to my guy’s ball, it’s not there. We can’t find it anywhere. And Trump is now ON the green already putting! Where’s our ball? And then Trump starts yelling back at us, “Hey guys! I made a birdie!” He’s holding up his ball and celebrating. And that’s when we realized. He stole our ball!

Trump, his partner, came over and secretly knocked the ball on to a part of the green where Dunleavy could putt it. Dunleavy picked it up and put it back where it was. “That’s when Donald starts yelling to the other two,” Dunleavy recalls. “He goes, ‘Guys, guys! I wanna tell you how great a guy Coach is. I knocked his ball over here so he could have a putt at it. But then he put it back! And that’s why he’s an unemployed coach and I’m worth $13 billion.”

    The New Yorker:

“He’d declared that the [Bedminster] club should start having senior club championships for those 50 and up, but he forgot that one of the best players at the club had just turned 50,” Reilly writes. “Having zero chance of beating the guy, he went up to his Trump Philadelphia course on the day of the tournament and played with a friend there. Afterward, according to a source inside the Bedminster club, he called the Bedminster pro shop and announced he’d shot 73 and should be declared the winner. The pro, wanting to stay employed, agreed. His name went up on the plaque.” This turned out to be a double con. When someone from the Bedminster club called up Trump’s caddy at the course in Philadelphia and asked what he’d shot there, the caddy replied, “Maybe 82. And that might be generous.”

well-known sportswriter, Michael Bamberger, reported that Trump won the 2018 club championship at his West Palm Beach club without playing in that tournament, either. And Trump admitted to Reilly that at least some of those eighteen club championships weren’t championships at all. “Whenever I open a new golf course, I play the official opening round and then I just call that the first club championship,” Reilly recounts Trump as saying. “There you go! I’m the first club champion!"

“If you’ll cheat to win at golf, is it that much further to cheat to win an election? To turn a Congressional vote? To stop an investigation? If you’ll lie about every aspect of the game, is that much further to lie about your taxes, your relationship with Russians, your groping of women?"

Some people have selective amnesia. One could say it is almost a skill. He may cheat all the time, but then “forget” he was cheating. Or he could be one of those who believe “if you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying”. And thus being good at cheating (even if you aren’t but they let you (sound familiar?)) Makes him the worlds greatest whatever.

You don’t think the cheating pedophile, who cheats and lies about everything, constantly, knows that he cheats and lies?

Yes, he knows he cheats. Also, he’s on the Epstein list. He knows that too.

Trump cheats, lies, rapes and steals. But I don’t think HE consciously thinks of anything he does as cheating, lying, raping and stealing.

People don’t tend to want to think of themselves as the bad guy. So they make up excuses to justify their behavior.

I worked for a small company and traveled with the owner frequently. Somehow we got on the subject of bonuses for the sales staff and he told me he often finds ways of reducing their bonus if they ever got a massive deal because they are salespeople and they would just waste the money and hurt themselves… In his mind he was responsible enough to handle the money rather than waste it. I’ve encountered similar altitudes and behaviors with more than a few business owners and wealthy people I’ve encountered. They hide behind many excuses for bad behavior.

The only reason Trump is scared is he knows how his base will see this.

IMO the discussion whether it’s done knowingly or not is moot in such cases.

Analogy: some people are so used to their own “fuck the world” attitude that throwing trash on the sidewalk is second nature to them, they hardly think about it. So they don’t do it knowingly. Does that in any way lessen their deed? Not to me. Quite the opposite: it’s a larger problem.

No argument here, a corrupt asshole is still a corrupt asshole no matter what they make think of themselves.

But because they can genuinely believe whatever bullshit comes out of their mouth others have no problem buying into it as well.

ELI5: what does it mean to cheat at golf? I’ve only golfed about 6 times in my life, and everyone I’ve golfed with does a Mulligan on every other hole, tosses a ball hit into tall grass onto the fairway, throws out a new ball if they hit it into the woods, etc. They’ll usually add another stroke to their score for these, but what does it matter if you’re only playing against yourself?

Obviously if you’re playing in a tournament or professionally, doing the above would count as “cheating”, but it’s not clear to me where the line is

I mean, you’re still playing with 3 other people, so if they’re watching you breaking the standard rules without agreeing from the start things like “everyone gets a mulligan per 9” or “take a free drop if you shotgun a beer”, that’s a poor reflection on your honesty.

That’s why these stories of Trump ring true, because it really doesn’t matter and if you cheat when it doesn’t matter, then what do you do when it does?

Don’t be so hard on yourself. It is a bit cringy but who cares? It’s a game where you basically just play against yourself for fun. You fill out your own score card and you can write down any number you want without affecting anyone else in any real way. I’d find someone getting upset at your cheating at golf when you were a kid even more cringy.

When I was a kid, I played t-ball one year. My only memory from it was one time I was on defense but was more interested in drawing in the sand than paying attention to the game.

Or when I was a bit older, I was playing softball (parenta really wanted me to be interested in some baaeball variant I guess). I was on 2nd base and the pitcher missed catching a throw from the catcher and it rolled towards me. Instead of stealing 3rd, I stepped off the base and stopped the ball with my foot to be helpful. Lol the 3rd base coach wasn’t impressed. Technically I should have been out, but it was just a recreational game so they let it slide. I was really embarrassed at the time and would remember that moment for years with regret. But eventually I realized it didn’t matter in the slightest bit and I can laugh at how much of a dork I was.

Because the reality is all kids are dorks and doing stupid shit is a part of growing up and learning to be a bit less of a dork going forward.

Totally believable. But Golf is kinda unspectacular even when you’re cheating.

I once saw a video of Putin playing ice hockey with his cronies, for media propaganda purposes of course. It was a sight to behold, how his opponents scrambled to get out of the way and let him win.

Unfortunately I cannot find it on YT - it’s flooded with said propaganda videos.
