There is actually a lot of unrest in China, most just never gets reported.

It’s not a new phenomena either, back in their imperial days they had a lot of local rebellions and revolts, and they similarly didn’t even record them unless they surpassed a threshold.

But they have a lot of incidents of villages throwing out their government officials, or hounding them during the party congress, or so I read, although that was around 2011 when I read that incidentally.

The sad part is that thanks to technology it is very easy for China to crack down people exercising basic human rights. That’s probably why nothing major has happened in a long time.

There were the white banner protests a few years ago. Technologies like mass surveillance and face recognition were used to track protesters down and quietly vanish them, though. Videos of the protests got shared on the western internet but it didn‘t really go viral. We didn‘t see videos of mass arrest or anything.

That‘s because the arrests were spread out through days and weeks in hundreds of different operations. The Chinese regime is aware how powerful these images would be. So they use their surveillance state to do the dirty work quietly. People still protest. Major things happen but we barely hear about them because the arrests and killings don‘t happen in the public anymore.

        High-tech simply obscures their cruelty.

Yeah, from what I’ve heard, China has much more localized government and policies than people in the West think, and local government catches flak from people regularly.

So they have a system where towns are appointed a mayor who gets changed out every 5 years. The mayor is then graded on things like education, economy, popularity, and how many veggies the village ate.

The purpose of this is to prevent local fiefdoms from developing and to quickly identify and remove underperforming leaders.

This has the effect of people appealing to the provincial government to either keep or remove candidates who are exceptionally good or bad.

The US has never been a democracy, at our best we weren’t even a particularly good representative republic. If our government & media describes something as “pro-democracy” it is 100% definitely corrupt bullshit that will harm the vast majority of people and benefit our ruling class alone, no exceptions.

      • You mean: How do I feel about a bunch of weirdos supporting a regime that have tried to terminate my existence via the enforcement of One Child Policy? (I was the 2nd child born in my family)

Idk… am I supposed to like people that believes its for the greater good for me to have been aborted because “bUt tHe oVeRpOpUlAtIoN”…?

I mean, I very much like breathing and watching movies, tv shows, anime, and I’m glad I’ve been able to play fun games like FTL… so I’m not too keen on the government that catergorically rejected my right to exist… and I don’t really like those uninformed weirdos that thinks somehow CCP taking control of their country is gonna magically solve problems… like lmao, lets see these porn-addicted people try watching porn in China… (porn is illegal)

I’m pretty sure (or hope) that antinatalist ecofascist horseshit will get you banned from any leftist instance, nobody thinks the 1 child policy was anything except a mistake based off some liberal neomalthusulan horseshit.

try watching porn in China… (porn is illegal)

I’ve done that lol just use a vpn. Probably a quarter of my xhs is thirst content

Very fair. They always insist that people in China really like the CCP but I’ve never found that to be true. Having lived in a city with a very large Chinese diaspora I found that people generally really didn’t like the CCP. But maybe theres some selection effect going on there? The people who didnt like the CCP are the ones who left? Im not sure.

Either way, those guys on lemmy.ml are really intense. You say one thing they don’t like and they’ll just come at you like a pack of dogs and fling insult after insult your way. Source: I accidentally said something moderately supportive of NATO without realizing I was in an .ml community yesterday. It was a trip

It has always fascinated me how a bunch of people who have never been to China, and who don’t speak the language have such confident opinions about Chinese politics. It’s the exact same racist paternalism they constantly accuse liberals of, but with a triple dose of fart huffing.

So part of the reason for that is .ml and hexbear are pretty much the only instances blocked by the great firewall. So .ml users who go to China can either jump instances or use a vpn/hk-based esim to post.

There’s absolutely zero doubt there’s some selection bias there. The question is, how much?

I don’t think people backing one child policy and similar policies have beef specifically against you and your existence. They believe overpopulation to be a problem and believe authoritarian practices to be the best solution to handle the problem.
