I think it is important to remember that the dim-wit who ordered those ships to go through the war zone are in all likelihood not the same people as the people forced to actually crew the ship doing so.
Even if the crew believed it would work out, that is again a larger issue with the incompetence of whatever entity financed a massive ship to undergo a voyage, hired those crew and sent them off into doom.
What kind of dim-wit entered a war zone not under ceasefire and where the owners said “You Shall Not PASS!”
