IN 16 pages, the Trump administration’s new official counterterrorism strategy outlines in broad terms who it views as terrorist threats and priority targets, ranging from anti-fascist activists to ISIS and so-called narco-terrorists. The line “We will find you, and we will kill you” appears in the memo.

Poorly written laws ( and executive orders, etc. ) are a feature not a bug.

If it’s open to interpretation, it can be changed to suit their needs in the moment

No, it’s obvious that they define extremism here to mean „the left wants to support gender identity, immigrants,… and that’s bad“ but one can also easily read it as „the right fights against these things and that’s bad is bad“.

I don’t think that’s what they wanted. Unless they want a reason to also fight their own if needed to keep them in line. But there are usually even easier reasons…

Now imagine if the next president was really left and said “we’ll use this law” what Fox and company would say.

There’s no reason to expect this to be interpreted with an accurate description of “left” and “right”.

My point isn’t to say that this will be used to accurately target right wing extremists, but to say that this will be used against anyone oppositional to the state regardless of specific ideology or alignment
