    Such wastage.

    It’s so easy to slice around the pit to split in half and then crush out the flesh. No left behind bits. It comes out as a few lumps and then paste.

      Ah but you forget; think of how dumb (at times) the average person is, half of them are dumber than that… Also you don’t need the knife to get the pit out, just squish the sides a little bit and the pit just falls out, no more knife danger.

    I was back home visiting my family last year and I noticed my mom struggling with an avocado. She had the skin about half peeled off and was trying to hold onto the slippery inside while peeling the rest of the skin off in little chunks. I asked her what she was doing and she answered “peeling the avocado” like it was some ridiculous question. About this time my wife noticed what was going on and started cracking up laughing. She finished peeling and awkwardly slicing it while we discussed the fact that we had never seen anyone do it that way and on the next one we showed her the “cut it in half, remove the pit, and scoop it out” method. She was blown away. Apparently she has just always peeled them and never questioned if there was an easier way.

      I peel them, it’s easy? Cut in quarters, peel off the skin. I dislike the “scoop it out”, it leaves avocado behind and you can’t get nice slices. It’s never been a problem, the skin usually comes right off in one piece.

      The way I peel them is better than both methods and similar to both. I cut it in half, remove the pit, halve the halves, then, especially if the ripeness is good, you can easily peel the skin off the quarters. And it doesn’t waste anything like scooping inevitably does to some degree. If the ripeness isn’t right, the quarters are easier to scoop effectively. So, win-win.

        I have never had a problem with waste from scooping but I have the perfect size and shape spoons and I am also usually making guacamole so anything that might get left behind on the first scoop just gets scraped out anyway.

        Thank you for saving me all the typing.

        And no one taught me this. After just trying to cut one once or twice this is super intuitive as the better way to do it.

        Also once sliced try them with some oil and balsamic vinegar drizzled over, and some salt and pepper.

          Np. I wish I could take credit for thinking up this method myself, but a person who is otherwise douchey, taught me haha.

          To clarify, do you mean the balsamic and salt and pepper is for taste (mouth watering as I think about it…) or does it also help with the peeling process?

        That isn’t that odd. We go out and gather a bunch of them from the tree and if they are really ripe they go in the fridge. They will last longer.

        Putting ones that aren’t ripe in the fridge can ruin them though.

          If your knife is sharp it can be easier to slice it into quarters with the skin on, then slice the insides as normal, and then you can just pinch the ends and invert the skin and the slices pop right out. No scooping necessary.

    Dude at least they attempted to scoop it out. My better half cuts it in half and SQUEEZES it out because she’s decided it’s better/easier than cutting it out properly. Now I walk into the kitchen and find the mutilated remains of our avocados.

      I’ve started squeezing it out more often. saves me having to clean a spoon and if it’s the right firmness, doesn’t really leave anything behind.

      what I’m saying is that your partner has a skill issue.

      now, there is a trick to it - slice the flesh first. don’t just grab a half and start squeezing - you have to give it structure that wants to easily slip out. do a grid pattern and the pillars just pop right out. this is, in my experience, the least effort method to get avocado into a nice guac situation. slice and dice, squeeze into bowl, mash with fork. minimum number of utensils.

      It takes literally 1 second to do with a spoon.

      But I’ve learned not to have those arguments with my wife.
