I am thinking that moving out is my only option, but I did some research and being unhoused is basically illegal in America due to how local ordinances restrict sleeping outside and stuff.
I am scared and I do not know what to do.
Also, sorry for stating this again, but I am too traumatized to enter college again and my parents will force me to work at their place (they are awful to me and they likely contributed to my mental health issues).
I am also sorry for saying I might have to move out repeatedly, but I am truthful when I say that I might have only a few days to come up with a decision.
Edit: Also, the due date for college application have passed, so I cannot attend even if I wanted to.
Edit 2: In terms of applying for housing help, one program I asked about had a waitlist for several months (which is likely the same for many organizations), and others were not even long-term shelters in the first place. It feels like escaping my parents will be difficult (even though I am already an adult).
Edit 3: I just remembered that someone recommended that I do something on a website where you worked for housing, but it turns out that I could not even do that due to the fact that it required something I did not have! Also, I must repeat that I did not finish college and have very little work experience.
Additional context: I cannot drive, am mentally ill, had bad experiences from my last college, and I have no support network nearby. No one can help me with housing and housing programs will likely take months to allow housing to me.
I cannot stress enough how bad being homeless is, and how difficult it is to get out of being homeless. The homeless people I’ve interacted with are abused, hyper-traumatized, and sleep deprived.
Not sure what made your comment hit me, but I am starting to doubt if moving out will be the right decision for me. It is difficult to say because I have never been homeless, yet it is also difficult for me to consider staying anywhere near my parents as a good option either.
This would not be as big of a problem if housing programs were not so bad in America.
I wish I could have useful advice to share, friend.
I am still glad you are talking to me (I was worried no one would reply to my post). I do feel a bit anxious about the future, but I just hope I will be able to come up with a decision eventually.
What alternative would you suggest? Working at my parents’ place?
What have you done so far :o
I have come up with a plan in mind for where I will go to if I move out (I will move to a state outside of the South to one of the states that people have recommended), though I am a bit ashamed to admit that I wish I had better plans than this.
Unless that was not the answer you were asking for, I think that is all.
Edit: On an unrelated note, I am worried about how I will message my peeps here because I will not be able to use wifi outside of libraries and stuff.
Ah I was wondering if you’ve looked at any government programs or anything, in my state the government can pay for housing sometimes so I was wondering if you’ve done that. Every state has a resource directory you can call by dialing ‘211’ and the operator there knows all about housing resources.
I have, but I gave up after applying to one and realizing that I would need to wait months (my hope was crushed after that).
I heard that 211 only directed you to housing resources, and they do not actually provide anything because their main goal is to provide resources.
That is true, it’s just a directory! I would call if haven’t already, they did help me in my state
How did they help you?
They told me about new housing resources I didn’t know about!
I will keep that in mind, but I hope I will not end up needing to use them.
Community colleges have open enrollment meaning you can sign up for classes up to the day before classes start.
Community colleges are excellent ways to save massive amounts of money, and they’ll have resources to help you find housing and food. Plus as a student you will receive SNAP even if you’re not working, you just have to mention you qualify for the Pell Grant.
Then after two years you can transfer to a four year school.
Is that a good idea? Not sure if I feel the motivation to go back to college (I think my depression will also flare up again).
Sorry, I wish I had some advice for you, but in this sick system housing is very difficult to obtain unless you either have money or tick the right boxes. I hope you can find some way out.
Thank you for talking to me anyways -
I understand you have to struggle with the absurd system as a disabled person, so it feels like to have someone that is going to a difficult situation of their own (though our situations are different in other ways).
I think I might take this day to chill and stuff.
It seems all the systems are designed to actually prevent people from accessing help. Probably to save countries money.
Yep, you got that right. The system is designed so a minimum amount of help exists in order to blame it on the individual for not being able to get help (like if you are homeless, you are told that you are a drug user that refuses help, even if you have tried to get help and got none).
Yes, that’s exactly right. I lost count of the amount of times I was told on reddit “BuT tHEre’S sO mUCh hElP Out ThErE” and told if I wasn’t accessing it, it was my own fault for not trying hard enough. But there really isn’t enough and what little there is is so hard and exhausting to access, especially if you are already ill and dealing with a lot.
yeah it makes one feel really bad about themself, and it also shows how out-of-touch the people giving that advice are. Life is very difficult.
