While technically correct to some extend, “everyone sucks here” is not something I would say when 1 person is annoying and the other tries to murder them for it.

People are annoying because they can do it without any consequences. Jetskiers, bikers, people with BT speakers in public places… they all suck big time. Drawning them is going to far but I would 100% support public lashing.

The thing is you say that, and I believe you. However, other people like the angry asshole who tried to drown a guy also say that, but they aren’t joking.

When two strangers stand side by side saying the same thing, how do you know which is joking?

I was more looking at the spirit of what you were saying. Honestly because I have the same thoughts too, like “You wouldn’t be acting like this if you realized the thin veneer of social conduct protecting you from me”. I think that’s why I wanted to say something, there seems to be a degree of complexity needed for how we handle crybullies or normal ones in society

The spirit of what I was saying is more “antysocial behavior should be punished because otherwise assholes just keep assholing”. Sadly there’s just to many selfish idiots to effectively enforce social norms like that and over-criminalization leads to issues of its own. All we can do is hope enough people will get educated and respect others for this world not to turn into ever bigger shithole than it already is.

Right but how does one differentiate between effective punishment and just targeting inconvenient people for perceived annoyance? I agree with you, but there’s a very old trap in there too that I don’t think any institutions or educated individuals have done well in navigating.

Actually I disagree, I don’t think the problem is to differentiate that. For example there are very clear rules about not using phones in some places. It’s very effectively enforced on planes but it’s rarely enforced on trains and busses. It’s because you have a crew that is tasked with enforcing it on a plane and there’s a clear punishment for not obeying them (you leave the plane). We don’t have a problem with people being removed from planes for “perceived annoyance”. On trains and busses we don’t have a crew that removes annoying people so it’s up to other passengers to complain. People don’t do this to avoid confrontations and escalating things so trains and busses are full of assholes talking on their phones or watching Instagram with speakers on full volume. The rule is there, it’s just not enforced because it’s not considered important enough for the state to enforce it and assholes take advantage of that. The exact same thing happens with motorbikes breaking noise limits. The laws are there, they are just not enforced because it’s difficult and police has other things to do. There’s also no risk of the punishment becoming to cruel. State managed to effectively punish people for driving offenses, for not picking up your dog’s shit or for littering. Other anti social behaviors can also be enforced like that, we just don’t care about them enough.

Well, I guess I envy your experience having never witnessed rules and laws being arbitrarily weaponized against people. It definitely does happen, you kind of just have to actually be examining it. Generally if you interrogate the keepers of such rules like policemen or customs staff, they will say the opposite of you. That they do enforce all rules impartially, or they would if they weren’t restrained by zealous oversight.
