I personally don’t understand how someone can have fomo for any valve device. Not trying to pull away from quality or insult it. By its very design you can play anything you can play on Steam on the frame. But you can also play almost anything on Steam using any PC. Or other VR headsets.
It’s not like a Nintendo system where you may miss out on a new Zelda game until the emulation community gets their hands on it.
Again not a knock, it’s what in my mind valve intended.
I don’t see how this will work for the Helix Xbox. As I again I see nothing of value to wait for. I can play anything on my PC the helix will. Anyone wants to play helix games no need to wait build or buy a pc …

I’ve been wanting to replace my Oculus Quest 2 for quite some time but there hasn’t really been viable options for PCVR in the recent years if you didn’t want to break the bank or support Meta/Facebook. Not saying Frame is cheap by any means but it’s cheaper than Bigscreen Beyond, for example. I think that explains some of the fomo.
But if you have 2k disposable, then there are so many better options available than throwing it at a scalper. That’s what doesn’t make sense to me.
One way to look at the situation is that some entertainers need to be first to market to making “content” about the steam frame. Darn entertainment industry.

Not sure if you’re counting PC hardware cost or needed accessories, but the base pricing seems comparable especially Bigscreen being smaller+lighter+microOLED.
EDIT: Seeing now that the Bigscreen doesn’t include controllers, and the Valve Index controller setup recommended (Knuckles+multi-base-station) is a significant cost. I guess technically you could still do a lot with just
head-trackingand other peripherals (and maybe even other VR controllers?) but I see the point especially at this cost level.No camera either so head tracking is still an issue and passthrough doesn’t seem to be a possibility. So I guess without having anything else, it’d basically be a fancy monitor with eye-tracking. I’d say maybe one benefit would be ability to lie down, but this might be a quick way to get motion sickness depending on the content.
I recently dusted off my old Quest 2 and I still enjoy it a lot. If you don’t mind me asking, what are some good upgrade options outside of the Quest 3? I looked up the Bigscreen Beyond after reading your post and it looks amazing. I don’t understand how it’s so much smaller than its competitors.

I really like the steam deck, specifically for the inputs. It enables me to play “spreadsheet” games in bed or on the couch. The controller enables me to use the SD docked on the TV. I had fomo for the controller but was absolutely adamant about reporting scalpers on eBay. Back then, eBay wasn’t super responsive. It looks like it has improved.
I understand wanting to get your hands on a Frame as soon as possible, but who in their right mind would pay double the price, especially considering that Valve’s own price isn’t exactly cheap? And it’s even worse that these listings are just for spots in the reservation queue. It could still take weeks or months until the spot turns into a chance to purchase, and there’s no way of knowing how long it will take beforehand. So you would be paying 1k extra for nothing basically.

Well not quite. Even if it takes a month for the first units to ship, you’ll be along the first to get it. People that have thousands to throw at shit like this aren’t just worried about how long it’ll take, they need to know they’re getting it before everyone else.
That’s the thing, Valve made it so there’s no way to guarantee you’ll get it before anyone else. A spot in the reservation queue only guarantees that you’ll get a Frame from the first production batch, but the order within the queue is randomized and not known. The first orders will start shipping next week, but personally I predict it’ll take weeks at minimum before everyone in the queue even gets the option to pay, let alone actually have their orders shipped. So you could pay a scalper 2k and still be the last person in the reservation queue to get the device (or don’t get it at all, if the seller turns out to be a scammer…)
It makes a bit more sense if you didn’t make it into the reservation queue in the initial lottery and were waitlisted instead. That probably means you won’t be getting a Frame from Valve within this year. But I still wouldn’t pay double the price just to move from one queue to another.

There the lottery system was not used, so scalpers are buying and shipping it from there.

On the more options page, there should be a [Confirm My Choices] banner/button at the bottom of the page, and yes they are defaulting to off.
