From Wildcare Oklahoma

It’s the milestone we’ve been trepidatiously waiting for all year - WildCareOklahoma’s 10,000th patient. It’s a number few centers in North America ever reach within a year.

And, it’s a milestone we have mixed feelings about. Our goal is to keep wildlife in the wild whenever possible, where they belong. We never want animals to need us. But reaching 10,000 patients speaks volumes about the demand for wildlife medical care and rehabilitation and the toll that human-caused injuries, displacement, and illness are taking on wildlife.

Our milestone patient is a Great Horned Owl who arrived with significant eye trauma and in a severely emaciated state. We suspect the owl was struck by a vehicle while hunting along a roadside, leaving it injured and unable to feed itself for perhaps two weeks.

This owl has a long road to recovery ahead. Our veterinary team will provide the specialized care it needs, with the hope of one day returning it to the wild.

That is our goal for every patient who has a reasonable chance of recovery and release - not simply to save a life, but to give that animal the opportunity to live wild and free again.

10,000 patients. Each one an individual life. Each one a reminder of why wildlife medical care matters and why preventing these injuries in the first place matters even more.

Wildlife belongs in the wild. We’re here when they need us, but we hope for a future when fewer of them do.

Wow! 10k with over 2 months left to go… 😮

We are a large center where I’m at and we were closer to 4k than 5 this year. That is one heck of an effort they’re putting in!

10k patients is both extremely admirable and heartbreaking. Bless these folks and anyone else in the wildlife rehab field.

Dang, I just looked it up, since I was wondering if OK was short on rehabbers to get volume that high, but it looks like they have quite a few!

I scrolled their feed to see if it was predominantly a few species, but their (shared) intakes seem extremely diverse. This does sound unusual for them based on their end of July milestone post:

WildCareOklahoma has admitted our 8,000th wildlife patient of 2026.

This milestone has only been reached three times in our 41-year history - in 2024, in our record-breaking 2025 season, and now again in 2026. This milestone highlights how many wild animals need help each year, and we know only a small fraction of those needing help ever make it to WildCare Oklahoma.

Maybe they’ve been improving their messaging, expanded their facility, got more volunteers or something, but regardless, I know how crazy our places gets with 4-5,000! Major props to this facility, and so excited to hear about such success.

I got involved with wildlife care to see and feel a positive change in my small corner of the world, and it has been so rewarding to be a steward for my animal neighbors. People are the source of so many of their dangers, it’s really the least I could do for them.
