My understanding is that orphan crushing machine is for highlighting systemic issues. This just sounds like the guy didn’t have family to take care of the dog and had to give it up because he was sick for a long time.
People not having that level of support in their lives could be considered a systemic issue imo. There’s also how a wealthy person could have paid for their dog to be looked after for an extended period instead of giving it up.
I think you may be misunderstanding the “man was forced” part. Its not like the hospital said “give up your dog or you won’t get surgery”. THAT would be orphancrushingmachine material.
Here it is meaning paraphrased “man needing lengthy hospital stay has no one to care for his dog. To make sure the dog is cared for, the man gave it up for adoption”.
I would think that would be more if he couldn’t afford to keep the dog because of the stay? This sounds more like he hadn’t been able to find someone to look after the dog while he would be gone. I’m assuming the nurse only learned about his plight after he’d already turned the dog in, otherwise I’d think they’d try to avoid having a shelter involved.
I’d argue this is more c/orphancrushingmachine but okay…
