Videos@lemmy.world•On This Problem Rational People Do Worse— Two boxes, one choice, and $1,000,000.English
2·7 days agoIsn’t this a question of hubris? The title claims that “Rational People Do Worse”, but wouldn’t a rational person surmise that there is some information/mechanism they don’t have access to that the computer does in order to achieve the success rate claimed? In that case the rational choice would be to claim the single box.
The other factor not addressed is the $1k vs $1m. The calculus changes a lot based on these amounts. If it was 10 bucks vs the chance to win millions? that’s the lottery. if it were $10k it be a lot harder to walk away from that.
As a thought experiment, its a lot easier to say what you think the answer should be, actually making that choice when there is real money is psychologically different.

Videos@lemmy.world•The rising cost of dissent in AmericaEnglish
1·9 days agoThe fact that he tried to shoehorn in supply and demand just shows how this person is an actual conservative.
It really makes no sense especially in this era where we have fake descent on both sides generated by AI.
While I probably disagree with most of his politics, I appreciate the fact that he stands up and says Trump is a fucking crook.

4·13 days agoI like an avocado sandwich with garlic salt. super tasty.
They are actively against SEL which is the stupidest thing I can imagine. The only thing I could imagine worse is feeding your kids lead paint chips.
I’m sorry, but it really bugs me that the small domino is a fucking war. While the big domino is depicted here as the AI bubble bursting.
At a minimum, it’s a * poor use of the meme *, but really the priorities are just way out of whack.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•The jokes write themselves...English
21·21 days agoWouldn’t that end up with a big survivorship bias? The truly corrupt would have no retractions from authors or institutions and there are potential incentives for publishers to not retract.
She is Italian, right? Does that qualify as white? Depends who/when you ask.
Personally I’m all for erasing the white identity. Its a fucking lie. My grandparents and great grandparents etc were Norwegian, Italian, Scottish. They did not consider themselves white.
If one wants to make an argument about an American melting pot identity, blending these cultures together to something new, you are lying to yourself if you try to exclude the massive influence non-‘white’ cultures had and continue to have on that shared cultural identity.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Guinea worm disease is on the brink of being eradicatedEnglish
40·1 month agowe are seeing a resurgence of New World Screwworms. We eradicated it in the US in 1966, however, we have since seen a resurgence. Basically we used sterile males to make sure no new worms would be born in the US but thats a big border, so we worked with Mexico and other north and Central American countries to push it down past panama. Unfortunately when republicans find out we are spending money fighting disease in other countries, they think why help them? and kill funding. So now we are going to have to spend a shitload more money to defend our wide ass border, rather than a fraction of the cost defending a natural border.
So we had a strange early insurance change at work. HSA plan went from 6k max out of pocket to 16k.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•San Francisco has the infrastructure to be a transit utopia. What’s holding it back? Something smallEnglish
3·2 months agoIt was very poorly written. The fact that you (and I) read the article and don’t know what they were intending to convey is telling. I THINK the issue is fragmentation that they mention breifly, but that is probably me bring my previous opinions to the article.

Opensource@programming.dev•Best CAD software for open source hardware design
5·2 months agoI think FreeCAD has potential. It’s not there yet. I’m trying to learn it but I’m getting a lot of grey in my beard and have been using Solidworks at work so long any new friction is frustrating.
For PDM/PLM. I’ve been looking at this recently. It also is not ready.
https://github.com/grd/FreePDM
Its more work to setup but I am of the opinion parts should have drawings to show critical dimensions. Drawings should have rev blocks describing differences.
There are issues to this approach, but it solves a lot of problems.
right? teams is a descendant of INSTANT messaging. I actually find it more annoying if someone tries to initiate a Teams Call without the “do you have a minute for a quick call?”
Some things are easier to do via email. Some things are best discussed live. Be that via text or voice or video.
