Canada@lemmy.ca•Hidden cameras show some stores unlocking speed limits on e-bikes, selling e-scooters that go up to 120 km/h | CBC News
22·15 hours agoThe problem isn’t the speed, there aren’t speed restrictors on motorcycles or cars.
The problem is there’s no safe lane for them to be ridden. There’s no infrastructure accommodation for them. They can’t be ridden on the sidewalk, and they’re unsafe in regular traffic. Bicycle lanes aren’t ubiquitous enough or designed well enough for bicycles, let alone these mixing with bicycles.
As usual, rather than raising taxes on the filthy rich to fund better infrastructure for the good of the people, they limit what we can do because it’s cheaper and we have less power to resist, or at least, aren’t organized well enough to exercise the power we have.
Finally, TV worth watching.

16·16 hours agoThis is going to keep getting worse. Laws to protect us are a long ways off, I expect. Regardless, we know cops don’t care much about laws.
We’re just going to need to be careful where we use our phones and what we use them for.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•We may soon have 70 million boomers too old to drive, too car-dependent to stop.English
9·17 hours agoAt around 84, my dad caused a small fender-bender, that’s when my sister told him he had to stop driving. He couldn’t turn his head to see behind him. That sucked for my sister, because it fell on her to get him out of the house for grocery shopping, etc. She was the only one who still lived in the same state. He ended up in an assisted living home for the last two years of his life with dementia.
Public transportation is great, but they don’t go into the suburbs. I suppose Uber and Lyft are the solution there, but my dad had no idea how to do that, he didn’t own a cell phone.
Capitalism has been fucking us hard for over 100 years, the offenses keep piling up, and only now are people starting to realize how bad it’s gotten.

Although some want him to stand trial, that’s not going to happen. Best to just be rid of him, and not make him a martyr for the 33% who still inexplicably support him.

World News@lemmy.ml•Trump says Europe agrees to ‘massive’ release of diesel amid war shortages
13·18 hours agoA better article with more details:
G7 announces oil reserve release, as Trump hails Europe diesel deal
Macron says G7 will release 100 million barrels over four months; diesel release to be ‘frontloaded’
In 2025, distillate (or diesel) fuel consumption (excluding biodiesel and renewable diesel) by the U.S. transportation sector was about 2.94 million barrels per day.
The U.S. alone uses 3 million barrels per day, 100 million barrels would last about a month. These barrels are not being released to the U.S. directly. It’s going to help a little, but not much, and not for long.
My understanding is no country stocks significant reserves compared to what is used each day, because oil sitting in storage costs money instead of making profits. Instead, we produce what is used and can be sold as soon as possible. Essentially, Just In Time for the energy sector, like every other manufacturer. So, this isn’t a real solution, it’s just Trump trying to earn brownie points before the election.

politics @lemmy.world•How Trump’s obsession with ‘rigged’ voting machines spread across US government
13·18 hours agoMy hope is the people on the ground, in charge of the voting process, who work for the state, not the feds, will do their job. From what I’ve seen virtually all of them are dedicated to fair elections, which is why almost no fraud has been found thus far.
You can help by urging people in your circle to vote and letting them know that their employer must give them time off to vote, by law.
If you’re tempted to help voters standing in long lines, say, by handing out water bottles, or letting them borrow a folding chair, you should check your state’s “line warming” laws. You could contact your local officials and offer to provide such items ahead of time in a way that doesn’t break the law.
Chocolate is fine, but I’d add a layer of cinnamon powder in the middle. I like cinnamon and chocolate together.
Three different Wikipedia sources:
Tiramisu is an Italian dessert of ladyfingers, coffee, mascarpone, eggs and cocoa.
[Ladyfingers] are low-density, dry, egg-based, sweet sponge cake biscuits roughly shaped like large fingers
Mascarpone is a soft Italian dairy product obtained by acid-heat coagulation of cream.
I could eat that anywhere.

politics @lemmy.world•Georgia election board will not immediately move ahead with GOP plan to fix flaw in election system
15·19 hours agoSince this has been known since 2022, they should have fixed it by now. My guess is the fix is in the software and probably already exists. It was probably written as soon as the issue came to light, and is just waiting to be deployed.
Shuffling the ballots is also an easy fix, the excuses given not to do this are bogus.
Something fishy is going on. The point that this leaves the election open to legal challenges is the main issue, and perhaps the main intent.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something other people seem to grasp easily that eludes you?
2·2 days agoSwimming.
Swimming two lengths of the pool was a requirement for graduating high school. They got me a college student tutor. I tried and tried and never got good enough to pass. They let me slide, I suppose because they could see I was trying.
Sportzing generally has never been my thing. I learned to ride a bicycle without a problem, and I can throw and catch a frisbee. That’s about it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something other people seem to grasp easily that eludes you?
3·2 days agoSlippery/sliding/rolling things underfoot.
I wanted to learn how to skateboard when I was a kid. I tried for several weeks, with a friend trying to teach me. I got tired of hurting myself, and gave up.
I know people don’t “grasp it easily”, but most people eventually get the hang of it, and it doesn’t seem to take them long.
Over the years I’ve tried roller skates, ice skates, and skiing. And, failed at all of them.
