The old guard is full of believers that are disconnected from the people they rule over and consider themselves part of the exclusionary western financial system, that’s why they are so attracted to Zionism as well, since it is even more restrictive and separated from the millions of still “too peasant” hwite Christian Westerners.
I don’t think most of them think of themselves as being played, sure some of the more national capitalists might, but people like Merz and Von der Leyen do see themselves as enforcers of the great white empire and whatever tomfoolery they have planned.
