Weather dotcom has premium gatekeeping and Accuweather just kinda sucks

EDIT: i just remembered not everyone is ND and doesn’t get really super into every topic enough to care about things like meteorology :[

Breezy Weather on my phone and Weather Underground on PC.

Breezy is also in FDroid, but that package only uses Open Meteo for the weather data (not super accurate in my area). The “standard” release on Github allows others (AccuWeather, NWS, Open-Meteo, OpenWeather, and some others). I use AccuWeather since it’s more accurate that OpenMeteo. I just don’t like AccuWeather’s app / ads.

that’s cool. yea i was hoping for something like that. i guess it’s hard to avoid commodification of meteorological reports since they rely on a bunch of individual stations sharing data… so once that gets snatched up by some capitalist power what are you gonna do, go make your own weather station?

or maybe not, i have literally no idea how this works. i assume people only know things by asking the local places. i guess they can tell me the weather on antarctica or the moon with a good enough satellite. (uh, well i guess that’d just be “cold,” and “none”)

Most of the weather stations in the US are operated by (or at least report to) NWS. AccuWeather et al just package that data and slap ads in their apps.

There are a lot of hobbyist stations connected to Weather Underground. I have one! I got it more because we are in kind of a microclimate area slightly different than the city’s main station. And also we are prone to hurricanes and other windy conditions, so I just wanna track the wind outside to know if I have to run out and secure loose items.

With the Weather Underground widget, I can have my station data right on my phone. Forecasts still go by the main city.

Fun fact, the mast for the old DirectTv dish was the perfect size for the weather station, and gave me an excuse to climb up and take the dish down finally.

Windy.com is fun to play with.

Android there’s Flowx, Raindar II for basic but quick local radar, and Breezy Weather for a more traditional but open source option.

Whoa, that looks like one hell of an app.

Given the depth of information covered there is a steep learning curve if you seek to use the program in it’s entirety, help information is available and touched on below.

How well versed are you in meteorology? I’m a layman but I’m definitely interested in it enough that I’d prefer to get my reports from something other than “the weather rock” 🤣

I’m a geologist. I took a meteorology class for funsies back at university.

It’s also my responsibility to ensure the drill crew’s safety. If a lightning storm is rolling in, we need to drop the mast on the drill rig so it’s not the tallest metal object around. 💀

I just ask ChatGPT. Now that NOAA has been gutted I figure it can guess as good as anyone.

    Of course /s… relax

Plus with the energy usage of OpenAI etc, the LLMs can just say “tomorrow will be warmer” and only get more accurate every time! :)

(I hope my joke about climate doom and gloom carried across the internet okay! ♥️)

I use Weather Alert. It’s free, no ads, has a nice radar and good hourly, daily and week forecasts. Plus dependable severe weather alerts.
