My coworker was the bosses son. He was complaining that his dad had the top down on the convertible. The convertible they rented in their last family vacation to Mexico. He was too hot and it was too sunny. I was flabbergasted.
I took these classes to be qualified to teach Jewish classes for a thing. We’re all like 16 here and the teacher had some sort of import export thing going on and needed to go to China for it (this was like ages ago) and so no classes next week. I jokingly suggested we just go with him. The other students started taking it seriously and started plans only for me to shrink and be all “it’s far too expensive” and they got quiet when they remembered me and twin were very middle class and the rest of them were…well above that.
If you don’t like it where you live, just move?
“it’s only sixty dollars” circa 2011
I worked at a cool party store on the edge of a college town. The school’s football team made it to a prestigious bowl game across the country in an expensive area. The amount of middle to upper class people asking us near-minimum wage workers if we were flying out for the game was pretty painful.
A dentist who earned ludicrous money couldn’t fathom why I (minimum wage worker) couldn’t afford £100 treatment. Bear in mind this was 2000 so 100 was waaaay more then. I explained it multiple times he didn’t get it.
Why don’t you just buy a new car?
This.
I was at work and there was one guy that is well off, him and his sister don’t really have to work, trust fund kids but he still works a regular job.
One guy keeps showing up late because his car is a clunker, breaks down quite regularly.
So this well off guy, who has multiple cars, just says… why don’t you just buy a new car?
Everyone kind of stopped and just looked at him.
We were all in our mid-twenties at that time so nobody had any kind of savings.
I’m about 43 years old and I literally just bought my first new car this year - and that was with a few years of saving/planning for a sub $30k car. Prior to that, every car was at least a decade old at purchase time, each one driven until they died.
It blows my mind how someone could just walk into a dealer and drop 70k, 80k, or way more on something “just for fun”.
I’ll be taking a break from work.
“That’s cool, what will you be doing?”
A world trip on my dad’s yacht.
“Wow, that’s cool. How long?”
A year. To discover myself and other places. My boyfriend will come with me!
They had just finished uni, done an internship at the place I worked at, and hadn’t enjoyed it. They were the second-richest person I had met. The other person complained about the trouble they were having getting some kind of piano into their top floor flat in the centre of Madrid, but it didn’t quit beat a yacht.
