I’m new to the fediverse and still learning how things work here. I apologize if I break the rules or etiquette of communities and instances. Please don’t assume malice or disregard, I’ll try my best to be respectful but there’s like a lot to learn and keep track of.

I like Emacs, GNU, free knowledge (free as in freedom), Lisp/Scheme programming, and software (and hardware, and everything) that is designed for autonomy, licenses aren’t enough. I’m ditching Linux as soon as Hurd becomes viable as a daily driver.

  • I love it when the free software world moves from “what if there was an open source version of this” to “thanks for the starting concept, dear company, we’ll take it from here and make something bigger and better”.

I remember I tried Luanti a while ago (before the name change) but got a bit confused by the many games, like I thought it would be literally just a free version of minecraft with builtin moddability. Once I read a bit about it it made a lot more sense, but by that time I was too busy to try it again. I’ve been thinking of getting back to gaming, I might give this a shot if I can’t find a free software version of Dwarf Fortress.

  • Bro stop, it’s literally my career because it was the only thing that felt easy to me (I tried a bunch of stuff before), like it’s a lot easier and cheaper to learn on your own than most crafts and imo it should be even easier. I don’t take this as offense, I take it as a compliment that we are one of the few careers where people still have enough power over their tools to genuinely improve them and enough solidarity to put in the effort of making it more and more accessible to others, be it by making simpler tools, or writing tutorials and guides for free, or taking the time to answer even the noobiest questions. I want to see more and more comments like this.

  • In my small town cars and pedestrians just kinda share the street. Like we take a look at each other and whoever seems to be the most in a hurry goes first. There’s very few traffic lights and crossings. Also very few cars and people, lol.

But back when I lived in a huge city, there was this big commercial street where traffic lights were literally ignored. A car would slowly threaten to run the pedestrians over until they stopped crossing, then the other cars would follow until enough pedestrians started threatening to get run over by the cars, then everyone would follow, and that was it, traffic was controlled by pedestrians’ willingness to die vs drivers’ willingness to kill them.

Worth mentioning that this only worked because that street was so crowded that at certain times of the year you could get an actual pedestrian jam, like the entire street filled with people, barely able to move, and more people constantly arriving.

Also, whenever police showed up, all the unlicensed street merchants would pack up their carts and run through the middle of the street so police wouldn’t steal their merch, cars were just expected to stop for them. Which was weird because the street was always full of regular cops, but there was this special type of cop whose only job was to steal merch from unlicensed merchants. The regular cops just ignored them.

I never understood why cars were allowed on that street, nor why drivers kept using it instead of taking a detour. Needless to say, moving away from that shithole of a city did wonders for my mental (and physical) health.

  • Difference is people in the US are generally not defending negative US history or actions

Yeah, I won’t even waste my time arguing, I just ask that you understand that it’s possible for people to disagree with this, as absurd as it may sound to you. I don’t think you’re acting on bad faith but you have no idea how absurd this claim sounds to me, if you want to assume bad faith that’s your problem.

But the point of my comment is: I can block lemmy.world if it bothers me enough, or I can not block it if it doesn’t bother me enough. And I don’t need to make a whole rant about it. That’s immature as fuck.
