Kamala Harris will receive protection from the California Highway Patrol after Trump revoked her Secret Service protection, law enforcement sources said Friday.
California officials put in place a plan to provide Harris with dignitary protection after Trump ended an arrangement that gave his opponent in last year’s election extended Secret Service security coverage.
Trump signed a memorandum on Thursday ending Harris’ protection as of Monday, according to sources not authorized to discuss the security matter.
It’s kind of weird how the CHP has become a hammer for things distinctly not about the highway. Got crime in Oakland? Send in the CHP with video cameras. Got homelessness? CHP is california’s state law enforcement agency, since “merging” with CSP (state police) in the 1990s.

As I understand the CHP absorbed the California State Police several years ago and are basically the equivalent of State Police or State Troopers in other states.

Permanent protection services like Secret Service wouldn’t be formed until McKinley’s assassination, until then it was generally a mixture of private guards and yes, sometimes military units, but it wasn’t common for them to be permanent details.
