(And I use “Free” loosely because I do pay for Prime Video, so it went from paid to much more expensive)

Haha jellyfin go brrrrrrr
Sail with us on the great ship Stremio
Stremio kind of sucks. You’re leeching a torrent you’ll never seed.
I see where your coming from but not everyone has the space to seed a torrent. I think those that use stremio and understand torrenting will one day, if they have enough storage contribute to seeding. I’m running on 256gb here T-T
Then don’t use torrents. Leeching without seeding is literally how torrents die.
Caching a torrent isn’t leeching. Like the other person said, it actually helps because it prevents multiple people from doing a hit and run. The torrent only needs to get cached once, and then everyone can just directly download that file, bypassing the torrent entirely.
Caching a torrent requires downloading, no? What guarantee do you have that they’re seeding that leech?
There is no guarantee, because they’re not seeding. There’s one hit-and-run, then the torrent is cached on a server for anyone to directly download. Again, IMO one hit-and-run is still better than thousands.
not true, it does sort of the opposite:
debrid services cache torrents in order to provide them at high speed to clients (that’s why they aren’t free: they need data storage).
this is a good thing, because it means the swarm is only taxed once per file, instead of constantly by potentially hundreds of streamers.
from stremio’s FAQs:
How Debrid Services Work with Stremio
Stremio itself is a media center application that aggregates content from various sources through add-ons. Debrid services enhance this experience by:
- Converting limited or slow hosting links into high-speed premium links
- Providing access to higher quality sources that might otherwise be unavailable
- Bypassing throttling and download limitations imposed by file hosts
- Offering cached torrents for instant streaming without waiting for peers
So you’re telling me that they’re offering a paid service for free. That makes me trust and want to use it even less.
EDIT: Turns out that stremoo doesn’t use debrid. That’s something a stremio user can configure. By default, you do leech torrents and never seed then.
use or don’t; who cares?
just don’t spread lies…
Sheesh, this place is turning into reddit faster than I’d like. Relax dude.
Stremio is free, the service you need to cache the torrents (Real-Debrid) isn’t. It’s about $/€3 per month, which is still cheaper than a VPN (which you need for torrents but not for Stremio/Debrid).
Wait, so if I get this right, stremio has nothing to do with debrid on its own. So if you just use Stremio, as is, you are leeching a torrent you don’t seed?
Correct. Without a Debrid service, you stream the torrent directly from the tracker. It’s also slow AF for all but the most popular content so you really don’t want to go without.
(In my experience most torrents are already cached on Debrid, BTW, so there’s no hit and run since you’re just downloading the file directly from a server.)
Streaming’s new feature: dynamic pricing based on how emotionally invested you are.
Consumers will love it because they now have skin in the game! - some exec
Putting cameras into all TVs has to pay off somehow.
Ten years ago my position on piracy was broadly, “do it if you want, but don’t act like you’re justified or ethical”.
Now I’m convinced piracy is more ethical than feeding these monsters.
I also don’t consider it a change in my own values. It’s a change in how fucking awful and in need of dismantling the Corporation has got.
Absolutely agree. When I got out of college, I was like “I have some money finally, I’ll support the shows and movies I want to watch by actually buying them online outright and streaming everything else legally!”
And then several of the things I “bought” got removed from my library several years later.
Then instead of 2 or 3 streaming platforms, there were suddenly 6.
Then every streaming service kept shuffling around my favorite shows.
And suddenly, the experience of paying for the content I wanted to watch became way too cumbersome.
Now is a great time to look into VPNs, 1337x, and qBittorrent. And of course Jellyfin.
or just get a decent adblocker and stream it.
Nah fuck all that. Just get Stremio + Torrentio and pair it with Real-Debrid. No fucking around with downloading torrents and building a library. Just pick what you want to watch, and watch it. Works like any other streaming platform, except everything’s in one place.
Problem with that is, what happens when Stremio gets shut down like every other illegal streaming platform to date? What happens when they no longer want to host the stuff I like?
I like having the files locally, so that when streaming platforms die, og just decide not to waste server space on the stuff I like, I can still watch the shows and movies that are no longer avaliable anywhere.
That’s true, this one updates regularly if one streaming site goes down:
I won’t really fight anyone suggesting “Yarr-harr” approaches, but if you’re just looking for something to watch and legality becomes a hurdle as you describe: Libraries offer a huge backlog of stuff (watched some old Disney stuff I’d targeted, without sending the mouse money) as well as some digital services. It should be pretty easy to rip the DVDs they have on offer too.
Stremio has nothing to do with it, it’s just the frontend.
but you’d be right to make the same comment about real-debrid so ultimately your point is a good one
Stremio isn’t going away, just like Qbittorrent isn’t going away.
It doesn’t actually host any illegal content. Stremio alone is nothing more than a film and TV database. It’s not illegal to make a database.
You can also download them and keep them if you prefer, just keep a VPN going
The problem with Stremio is that it relies on torrents, but only caches the content you’re watching. Essentially, it puts you into a permanent leecher mode, and rarely contributes any meaningful seeding because the content is deleted shortly after you’re done watching it.
Stremio users are the libertarians of the piracy world. They’re staunchly independent, but also completely reliant on the infrastructure that seeders have set up and maintain. They want all of their content available conveniently, without actually putting in any of the “pay it forward” work that piracy relies on to stay healthy.
Essentially, if everyone used Stremio, nobody would be able to use Stremio. Stremio is only possible because of the people who actually seed.
Hear, hear. If you leech without seeding you are essentially killing the torrent.
I’d argue that you’re not really hurting the torrent, since most torrents are already pre-cached. It only needs to be cached once for thousands to enjoy the file.
Yeah it’s not ideal, but one hit and run isn’t going to make a dent in the grand scheme of things.
deleted by creator
This doesn’t last though
Sure, nothing lasts forever, but Real Debrid has been around for about 15 years at this point.
Been having luck with ext.to as well
I just found something that wasn’t on 1337x, so thank you. :)
or stremio + Torrentio + Real debrid, this is an easier method for those used to streaming without space on their pc
1337x is run by nazis.
Source?
Also (and this is a genuine question): Why would I care? They don’t earn anything from me. Does their political affiliation matter when it comes to sourcing copyrighted material?
Some folks don’t wanna experience hate speech in comments and usernames and shit just to get at torrents.
Hm ok. I never look at comments or usernames.
I like to check comments in case a comment warns me of a bad quality rip or something
They leave up pro-nazi comments and delete the ones calling them out.
Ruski streaming site + adblocker works well for me lately
I prefer torrentleech and milkie. Both are regularly open for new registrations.
Stremio+Alldebrid
I just got into Kodi/umbrella/deribit
all shows are free if you sail the high seas
The Amazon Prime model is the scummiest. At least Netflix doesn’t bait you into a subscription just to then tell you actually the show you wanted to see costs even more.
To play devil’s advocate:
The Netflix equivalent of this is that the show just disappears (the Marvel shows) or you get the first seasons and not the last or even the last and not the first (at one time Prime had part of Lucifer and Netflix had the rest).
The only reason that it went from free to paid (instead of just disappearing) is that they lost the licence for streaming it under Prime Video but they didn’t lose the licence for selling it.
I doesn’t really make a difference whether it was the actual platform or a higher decision; the end result is pissed off fans that turn to piracy instead of giving you money. Then those fans give you even less in the future. There will always be some that just say ‘fuck it’ and pay up, but it’s diminishing returns.
This bullshit is exactly how pirates are born.
Why do they even have limited time licenses? This doesn’t happen for music streaming services.
The number of songs on places that are ‘not available in my region’ despite being saved previously when played might dispute that.
That’s the main reason I switched to Navidrome and downloaded a ton of flacs. No one’s stopping me from drinking whiskey in the bathtub listening to sad music during my monthly breakdown.
The really crazy thing to me is when a game is updated to remove copyrighted songs they lost a license for.
That was apparently never a problem back in the days of CDs, but now they have to do that or else the poor music companies will go bankrupt.
Because the IP holders don’t want to give out licenses in perpetuity. They want to renegotiate and increase the price.
Because music streaming services compete (for the most part) based on experience and features not content. This happened after the market plummeted for music sales. TV and movies are still in the stage where everyone is competing with content by having exclusives while their services suck dick with few features, horrible UX, and ads. Im sure at some point they’ll go the route of music and games where youre not forced to sign up to a specific service to see a specific show, but who knows when that’ll happen.
This was reality when Netflix was the only streaming service. We had that already and it devolved into what we have now
It was still the same back then, it was just done via network TV channels instead of streaming channels.
I mean, for Lucifer it made sense, since first three seasons were under Fox (and different licensing in different regions). God, I wish Netflix didn’t “save” that show. At least it would have ended on a cliff hanger instead of a total destruction of the entire show. shakes fist angrily 4 years after the show has ended
There is a subset of shows and movies unavailable on a Netflix subscription with ads.
Yeah I was gonna say, aCtuAlLy Netflix does this shit too.
Psst, hey. https://fmhy.pages.dev/ Stop giving money to these assholes.
Obligatory https://rentry.co/megathread
This is shitty, but as a programmer I’m kinda impressed.
I mean those video players lazy load so it probably just requested the next chunk and got the “you gotta pay response” same as if you returned to a specific spot with a link after a long time.
Who cares? Be a pirate
Wait, you pay for Amazon prime and you have to pay for the show?? Why on earth…
They also show ads unless you pay more than the prime membership.
I haven’t opened prime since that day.
I cancelled it the day they announced that
Man, that’s not ok
Yeah, there’s stuff under the subscription and stuff you pay for (although you can pay for anything if you’re not a subscriber iirc)
It gives them a perverse incentive to remove shows from the subscription tier if lots of people are watching it. You also get shows where the first few seasons are in the sub, and then suddenly switches to pay for.
They’re an easy cancel.
sounds to me like all of your shows should become free. Properly free.
Remember, companies die when people stop giving them money.
Yes I’m working on ditching these billionaires. Not quite there yet, sometimes it’s a bit of a pain point with the smalah.
Hey, long as you’re working on it. I’ve been working on ripping my entire music collection from Spotify the past couple months before I tell them to go fuck themselves for the ICE ads, after ~10 years of paying for their service. I’m aiming to be done before January.
Arrrrrr
Torrent their show for fucking you over.
Buy a nas, start storing your own media. All subscription services will remove content, raise prices and introduce more ads. Its not a question of if but when.
Also, you are like a child sucking the capitalism tit when you use these services. Take your pride back.
Change to Linux when you are in the spirit. Grow up and join the adults.
grow up and join the adults
🙄
Yeah, so cringe.
You guys are so sensitive. :)
Literally 1984
Maybe so :)
How do you even “rip” media from streaming services? Like how to bypass the drm thing and convert the data to a file?
Most people dont do that themselves. They just download. Some people, specially in Russia, just stream movies from sites that exist. I dont do that but its popular.
You let somebody else do it.
They’re are ways that involve extracting keys from vulnerable devices if I understand correctly, but if they become well known then they get blocked.
Sometimes, you find things so niche, you can’t find a torrent for it even after looking through torrent aggregators.
you can’t find a torrent for it
If you are talking about books, then annas-archive should suffice. If other media, then private trackers is your only hope. The good ones usually have… pretty much everything
I know how you feel, I searched so long for Encounters of the Spooky kind and I still dont have all of Mr, Vampire.
But also, check archive.org and such. Sometimes stuff ends up in the weirdest places on the internet.
I’m on Linux now but why the hell would I want to pay to store media? If I want to watch something I just find it online, 1tb seed it a bunch then leap… The nas collectors almost want piracy to die to complete their orgasm.
Join the middle aged non binary fuck it people.
For me its because a lot of movies from the 80s and 90s are hard to find. Not everything exists online anymore. Popular movies generally do but ive had issues finding some things.
And then fast forward another 30 years. Will good movies from today still be there and will we be able to get them as easily?
I just store it so I dont have to worry. :)
If you mainly watch modern movies, then this is a not a problem. But I think a lot of modern movies are really stupid. :)
I watched the new running man and couldnt believe how dumb he acted.
The only thing you need to be careful of is falling out of touch with modern life because you’re still watching 90s films in the 2050s. Part of my enjoyment of the niche entertainment I consumed in the 90s came from seeking out new people to enjoy it with, searching for it on the proto-internet, and forming communities around the experience of watching it. I find that nowadays I can watch the film again but it just doesn’t bring the same kind of enjoyment that it did when I watched it 30 years ago. I hope I live long so I can see more new entertainment options come out and try those too, and my dvd collection gets lost and broken and water damaged from being left in the closet where it belongs.
Aaand it’s free again
Ah. Gone again.
It will always be free, matey. I mean, I would never do that, it’s illegal, but I’ve heard good things about all those high seas.
