“independent medical examination” in this context means independent of the subject, not neutral or impartial.
It seems an obvious ruse to depict her as crazy so that she either submits to being labeled crazy and the case is thrown out or refuses to be labeled crazy and the case is thrown out.
It’s not as though a psychiatric evaluation can substantiate her claims, only discredit them.
Used to be, girls and women who couldn’t keep their mouth shut would get sent off to the asylum and labeled hysterical.
Minority women, especially, in this position, may find themselves forcibly sterilized, since a hysterectomy was considered a valid treatment for hysteria.
Before that we just told them they couldn’t vote, or own land. And before that we just called them witches.
